Timbaland Named Songwriter Of The Year At ASCAP Awards

Super-producer Timbaland took home the Songwriter of the Year Award last night (April 9) at the 25th Annual ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers) Pop Music Awards in Los Angeles, CA.

Over 1,800 songwriters, recording artists, industry leaders and members of the music community gathered at the historic Kodak Theatre yesterday to honor the top songwriters of today.

Timbo won the coveted Songwriter of the Year award for his contributions to nine award-winning songs, including "The Way I Are" featuring Keri Hilson and DOE, "Give It To Me" featuring Justin Timberlake and Nelly Furtado, Omarion's "Ice Box," Fabolous' "Make Me Better," Furtado's "Say It Right" and JT's "My Love," "Summer Love/Set The Mood "Until The End of Time," and "What Goes Around...Comes Around."

This marks the third time Timbo has been recognized by ASCAP. He was honored twice as Rhythm and Soul Songwriter of the Year.

Fergie's "Big Girls Don't Cry" earned awards for Song of the Year, and collected Pop Awards for "Glamorous" produced by Polow Da Don and "Fergalicious," produced by will.i.am.

Rounding out the Top 5 most performed songs were Beyonce's "Irreplaceable," written by Hov's new wife and Stargate's Mikkel Eriksen & Tor Hermansen, and Nelly Furtado's "Say It Right," written by Furtado and Timbaland.

Other multiple Pop Award-winning recipients included Akon, Stargate and JT with five awards; Fergie, Keri Hilson and Ludacris with three awards; and Keyshia Cole, Furtado and The-Dream with two awards.

Interesting news, thanks for posting.

Not sure I agree, though--it's like they gave him an award just for being so prolific!

'Big Girls Don't Cry' - Song of the Year?

I can't believe - I CAN"T BELIEVE - I'm actually wishing Diane Warren was getting more hits on the radio these days.

Well, what do you expect??

People buy this shit music left, right and center. Look at all the people on this site alone who buy this type of music everyday and then come here and tell us how great it is.

Look at the new Madonna song with JT. It's pure shit, but some people think it's the second coming of christ. I'm sure it will win tons of awards next year too. Some people just don't know what really good music is. I realize that it can be subjective, but it's clear to me that most (not all) of the music over the past 5 years is garbage - here today, gone tomorrow.

At least Diane Warren knows how to write a song. Does anyone really think Fergie knows how to write a song? What - she puts a few words down on a piece of paper and calls it a song? Pathetic. Diane KNOWS how to write!

Oh, I agree. Hell, I actually like some Diane Warren songs ("I Will Get There," "Could I Have This Kiss Forever," "Blame It on the Rain," "Look Away," "For You I Will") and I absolutely love at least two of them ("Rhythm of the Night" and "The One I Gave My Heart To").

hmmm "Ice Box" by Omarion and all of the JT songs ASCAP nominated actually demonstrate his songwriting. You're right about the first two though:

"The Way I Are" featuring Keri Hilson
"Give It To Me" featuring Justin Timberlake and Nelly Furtado
Omarion's "Ice Box,"
Fabolous' "Make Me Better,"
Furtado's "Say It Right"
JT's "My Love," "Summer Love/Set The Mood "Until The End of Time," and "What Goes Around...Comes Around"

First off, congrats to Timb. I know a lot of you don't like him but dude works hard and has a musical resume to prove it. I'm not mad at him for getting some shine. Its not easy to flood a market with your material, even if its mediocre. That still takes a lot of work.

"Big Girls Don't Cry is a good song. Its not a "Song Of The Year" song by any stretch but its good. Its just that standards have been lowered considerably.

doesn't mean I have to respect him. All his hard work and ambition is adding up to me hating what's on the radio. And I'm not okay with that. sad

You still listen to the radio? His stuff is better than 99% of the stuff on the radio IMO.

Actually is NOT all of his hard work that adding up to you hating what's on the radio. You are simply doing what most people are conditioned to do - blame the artist. Its the EXPLOITATION of his work by corporations that makes you hate what's on the radio. Artists do what they do - they create. Timb would be doing what he's doing if he were doing it in a bar on a Friday night. Labels blow these producers up to "bigger than life" status. Its the corporatization of the music business that makes them play the same 20 songs over and over all day so they can run ads for you to buy stuff that makes you hate the songs you hear. If not for them, you wouldn't hear Timbaland as much as you do unless you played him at home yourself. Its the same reason that you don't hear a huge variety of good songs anymore. Its not Timb or any other artist's fault for doing what they do. Blame those who exploit them. Every artist want to be hard by as many people as possible; some actually get to do it.

Well I have been proven wrong...
I guess I still am not accustomed to a "songwriter of the year" that uses
Beats/ samples..and the occasional chord progression to win such a prestigious awards...forgive me...Im oldschool...where people can actually play..and songs have bridges
and changes and you dont get the whole deal in the first 4 bars..
"4 bars of drums and digital trickery"wink

prettymansson I would have to agree with you for "Say It Right"... you get the whole chord progression in the first 4 bars and it does not change except for different instruments coming in and out.

"Ice Box" isn't like that though.
