This great Bruce Springsteen song reminds me of Sam Cooke

Of course Sam's lyrics were more conventional, but this really has that catchy, soulful feel you used to hear in the '60s. I also think he was at his peak vocally in this era....

'85. The song is Man at the Top and was eventually released (in its orginal, full band, countrified arrangement) on the '98 odds-and-sods collection, Tracks. It's one of many, many Born in the U.S.A. outtakes:

Springsteen is a great soul singer and writer when he wants to be. He did some nice work with Sam Moore and Bobby King in the early '90s and it's a shame he's never done a whole album that focused on this sound.

There are three sides to every story. My side, your side, and the truth. And no one is lying. Memories shared serve each one differently
