Diddy Signs Janelle Monáe To Bad Boy Records

link

4/4/08

Janelle Monáe has been signed to P. Diddy’s imprint Bad Boy Records. With good reason, too—Monáe is one of those artists that emerges with such a distinctive voice and personality on stage, it is nearly impossible to listen and sit still.

“There is no doubt in my mind that Janelle is the kind of artist that changes the game,” P. Diddy said in a recent press release. “She is a true visionary, with an original sound and a mesmerizing presence.”

The Kansas City, Kan., artist who now claims Atlanta as home base has an EP coming out in June as well as a full-length album slated for September. The EP, Metropolis, is a futuristic concept based on a 1927 silent film of the same name by Fritz Lang. The plan is to release it in phases, with each phase revealing more of the story behind Monáe’s alter ego, Cindi Mayweather.

Before she moved to the South to become a recording artist, Monáe studied at the acclaimed American Musical and Dramatic Academy’s New York City campus. Upon finding her way to Atlanta, she became one of the founding members of the Wondaland Arts Society. In the past she has also worked with Big Boi and on Outkast’s Idlewild soundtrack.

“This is a new day, a new entertainment industry, and a world where the notion of what is independent and what is mainstream changes every day,” Monáe said in the release. “In this new, rapidly changing environment, I am thrilled that Antwan 'Big Boi' Patton and Sean Combs have partnered with me and the Wondaland Arts Society to promote my music and art around the world.”

For a glimpse of what Janelle is like live, check out her performance at Atlanta's Criminal Records, or view her appearance on TBS below. And seriously, if she comes to your town, do not miss her show. Don't say we didn't warn you.

hmmm Interesting. While in ATL, she was supposed to be hooking up with Ceelo's indie label. But, after he got back to his group, she probably decided to move on w/P Diddy.

cool She will find out what a big mistake she has made. When her first cd do not sell well.... if she ever gets one out. Remember what happened to New Edition. They also signed to the so called hot Bad Boy Records. The album was a flop & they did not like the way Diddy treated them. I do not know if it is true but i did hear that when they last toured they did not do any of the songs from that cd. cool

NE is GROWN and they've seen how effed up the industry is and I'm sure they could smell the BS on Poofy. They should have known better.

well last night I attended the artist showcase for JANELLE MONAE at the Blender Theatre in NYC and prior to her getting on stage the dj set was by old school former rapper D-NICE. Diddy gets up there on the stage while announcing Janelle and has a gentleman bring out two plasma sizes plaques about Danity Kane and Day 26 confused being number one confused He just doesn't know when to stop! He was very boisterious and loud, to the point of him being booed and heckled off of the stage.

Janelle was AMAZING her voice is the real deal...she's got a true sense of fashion style not sexual either im not sure the press which attended actually got her these are the likes of Rolling Stone-BLENDER-ELLE-VIBE-and other music
press.

I would describe her as a female Andre 3000 with a touch of Lena HOrne classic vocals.

AND back to puffy poof diddy he goes on to say al the artist he's worked with aside from the fact that 112 is still under his musical slave contract.as far as these number 1 sales it means nothing they won't be around years from now.
Janelle is partnering with BAD BOY and ATLANTIC REC she's still an independant artist with the WONDALAND ARTS SOCIETY.

i have to agree with you both. this is career suicide. diddy does not treat his artists well. he'll get them to number one and them drop them like a bad habbit. i think she should have held out for a better deal with another label. whatever happened to his girl group Dream???

But this artist is talented. really really talented. If Diddy gets her a number one she'll be bigger then him, bigger then bad boy recoreds. She'll dumb him like a bad habbit.

I like that song and her voice. She deserves to be big based on that alone but her hanging around a media ho like Diddy won't help her any. I hope that somehow or another she can blow up.
