The Stones' 'GOATS HEAD SOUP'. Underrated or The Downhill Slide? This album seems to divide many people. Most claim it to be the start of the groups' slide into musical mediocrity, or some see it as an underrated album that has been unfairly criticised for not being as great as their previous famous four albums. Now I must admit that a big reason why I like the album so much is due to Mick Taylor's excellent guitar soloing throughout the record. There is his playing on the track '100 Years Ago', which is just awesome. Also his playing on the songs 'Doo Doo Doo Doo(Heartbreaker)', 'Winter', 'Hide Your Love' and 'Dancing With Mr D' are all wonderful.
So what do any of you think about the album? Underrated or a flop?

Hmmm. This is an odd one. I'd say the answer is both. It is underrated, but then again, it really isn't as good as the several preceding it. It's not ever really one I pick out to play, but when I've listened to their stuff chronologically, I'm struck by the shif when I get to this one, though I do still enjoy it quite a bit. Kinda lukewarm toward the album in general.
However, Dancing with Mr. D is one of my favorite Stones tunes. Classic Keef riff and great slide work from Mick Taylor. Nasty, sleazy, decadent drugged-up R&R. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."

Goats Head Soup is hugely underrated, but that's understandable because it followed Exile on Main Street. Most of the songs on it are superb - Dancing with Mr D, Heartbreaker, Coming Down Again, Silver Train, Starfucker, Winter, Angie. It's not quite as good as the four albums which preceded it, but it's still a damn fine record.
I think It's Only Rock N Roll (the album, not the song) marks the start of the downhill slide, although it was arrested by both Black & Blue and especially Some Girls. That said, The Stones only really started churning out crap albums after Bill Wyman left. Voodoo Lounge was patchy (but still had its moments), but the last two - Bigger Bang and Bridges to Babylon - basically sucked. I know some of you are going to say that Dirty Work is their worst, but half of that album still stands up and warrants repeated listening. Bit of both I guess, but Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker) is probably my all time favourite Stones track. This is not an exit
