Also, I've noticed that CDs are much more easy to scratch than vinyl. For instance, last night I was listening to my CD copy of "How Will I Know" and it was scratched. However, I've had my vinyl copy for over 20 years with no scratches whatsoever.

Anyway, what do you think?

Vinyl last longer...btw...if that is Whitney Houston's How Will I Know, be glad it is scratched! lol

Somebody gave me a Shitney Houston CD as a gag gift one year. I used the plastic case to store a homemade CD-R of another artist in, I used the CD as a beer coaster, and I used the paper artwork to pick up dog shit in the front yard. lol

To answer your question I would have to say that vinyl is more durable considering how you have to slide them out of the sleeves over and over and there is an actual needle touching them.

Some CDs don't even have to slide out of their cases and a damn lazer is touching them and they still get fucked up.

I just wish that vinyl didn't have to slide out of the sleeves because I feel that's where most of the wear and tear coems from. What if the album covers all opened up like storybooks (ok, jewel cases) and you snapped the records to the middle?

That's exactly right on all points and an excellent idea on vinyl packaging.

wow, you can handle your lp's like you say without any sound problems, you are good.

Oh, I'm very careful in handling my vinyl, I was just saying that you can actually touch the vinyl and it's not going to damage it such as skipping or sticking. Just look at all the used vinyl for sale these days that is in great condition and I know those average folks that previously owned it wasn't as careful as I am. I would be scared to take a chance on buying a used CD though.

you have a point there. I go to record conventions all the time and find stuff unbelievably in great shape.

and the grooves in our fingers will even scratch a cd.

I see someone finally caught that part. It's a serious thread that asks a serious question but I threw the "How Will I Know" part in for April Fool's to see if anyone was on their toes. lol

I was gonna say something but I thought I was losing my mind. lol

I have one of those USB turntables that converts my vinyls to mp3s for portability but I never edit out the crackles and pops. I like it that way.

I still buy vinyl and I'll never stop.

Well, I realise that in actual fact the technology of the two formats isn't ALL that different, but still, vinyl seems very dated now, don't you think?

Mind you, in these days of iPods, mp3s, downloading, USB albums etc etc, even CD's seem dated now.

Wait til they get the telepathic-holography right and they can beam videos straight into your mind's eye. Now THAT is the future of media!

Vinyl is always a great medium. I lovemy cd, but I love my vinyl too. And I don't want nothing beamed into my mind. lol

And by the way, it's not necesarily an age thing. I'm only 32- and I don't own an IPod or MP3 device and I don't like downloading music.

The only reason I have had to download the Prince internet songs is becuase I couldn't get them anywhere else- but best believe, if I can get a "real" pressed copy, I would get it.
[Edited 4/2/08 14:27pm]

Oh yeah, I agree on the downloading thing. Even if the quality was the same (and it isn't - I personally think iPods sound quite poor compared to CD fo rexample) I want to have something physical, I want the sleeve or jewel case and the photos and the inlay and I want to be able to read which band member wrote the third song or whatever. I know I can get most of the info like that off the internet too but it just isn't the same is it?
This is not an exit

cool Do you get to wear a special outift? I can picture someone cross-legged on a mountain top in some kind of Indian clothing with a turban, serenely looking out across the peaceful landscape....

...and then the cell phone rings and his friend says "Hey, I got this damn song in my head, got a bit about 'we'll call him Nate, if it's a boy' in it..kinda laidback but funky-ish...I think it's from the '80's.....Any idea who sang it, it's going round and round in my head all day damnit!"

Actually, there are certain players that I have that will play a CD so scratched that it is missing the foil.

On the other hand, there's nothing I can do about a skip in a record.

So, while CDs are more fragile... it don't matter cuz they still be playin'

Take a scratched disk 2 a higher end store and try out the Denon. Your ears will be pleased not only at the playability but the detail in sound. . If u have the budget, try out a Mark Stevenson (sp)

I almost NEVER play my original cd's. I always make copies so that they don't get scratch, plus I rarely like the seq on the originals. I like 2 add the 12' versions, remixes and bonus tracks.....
