John Lennon was such a thief

I always knew the Liverpudlian wife beater had a casual attitude to other people's material, but damn, this shocked even me. "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)" is one of his most famous songs, so I was taken aback when I recently heard Joan Baez singing "Stewball" from 1963. The tune is almost identical. Her version of this old folk song is not on Youtube, but this version from 1965 by the Hollies is. Anyone notice the similarities between it and John's song written in 1972?

btw, did you read Albert Goldman's book "The Lives of John Lennon"??
It says John ripped it from a Phil Spector song from 1963?!

I remember that song Stewball! We sang it in elementary school. I thought it was the same when I first heard the John Lennon song, but eventually forgot about it.

Yeah, funny, since it's gone on to be a holiday classic that nobody mentions it. He's been sued before, I wonder why not for that?

WoW! eek

I tell ya what.. A number of years ago Julian would come to Austin quite frequently (He still might for all I know.) Anyway.. it's just so so sad the way he feels about a lot of things.

That's why I prefer keeping "entertainers" at a distance... I realize what we see is an larger-than-life image. But I'm sure the reality isn't as impressive as we might want to believe.

A very healthy attitude.

If you dig their music, fine.
But assuming they're any more special than you, the butcher, the baker or the candlestick maker is pretty warped.

even more than that, they are sometimes even more fucked up than us, as a some sort of cosmic balance for their extreme talent.

I don't want to have to hate a Jimi or a John Lennon because they were jerks in real life. So I either don't learn about it or I decide I don't care smile

This is exactly what puzzles me. I've read a reasonable amount about Lennon and have never heard this mentioned. Why he was never sued is also puzzling. I thought it might be because it's a traditional song, but no, the Joan Baez album had the three songwriters' names listed. I wonder if you put new words to the tune of "Imagine" and it sold well, if the Lennon estate would allow you to not pay them a cent. hmmm

definitely. If we've learned anything about superstardom, I think it's clear that being an Elvis, a Beatle, a Michael Jackson, isn't good for a person!

well by your "edgy" title it seems as if thought you struck gold... big fucking deal. If we were to play this game then every artist we listen to is guilty.

"Edgy" is my natural style. Anyone who's read just one of my posts should know that.

And don't get it twisted. We all know artists borrow from other artists, but in this case Lennon has borrowed the whole goddamn tune, lock, stock and barrel. It just surprised me because the song is so famous and I've never heard it mentioned.

yeah, considering he lost a lawsuit over Come Together, which borrows a line from Chuck Berry's You Can't Catch Me, but barely sounds anything like it.

It's weird we haven't heard anything about this, and it's on the order of My Sweet Lord/He's So Fine, a direct rip-off.
