Great artists SUCK when they stop using alcohol/drugs

see:

David Bowie.....all his cds from past 15 years have had only 1 or 2 great songs

Depeche Mode.....their last few cds full of filler....last single 'martyr' was depeche mode by numbers

Any other examples? eek

Red Hot Chili Peppers started to get, not worse, but less spontaneous/loud/hard/raw/crude when they got off drugs.

Michael Jackson made awesome music during his pain killers addiction. Which was the mid 90s, ala HIStory.

if the only album he released in the past 15 years was "reality", i would agree with you. but "outside", "earthling", "hours" and "heathen" all had lots of great music.

I think a lot of their music and persona in the late 80's/early 90's was a reflection of where they were at mentally and Strays was the same thing. It's just that they were in a more stable place for that record, so the record wasn't as turbulent.

the view that an artist sucks after drugs (such as nine inch nails) is one of the most foolish of all comments.
Wouldn't you love to love me?

You ain't lying. I remember Rick James saying back in 1985 that he was off the drugs. When everyone heard "Glow" they said....."Get that motherfucker some drugs!"

They also fall off when they become "saved".

I think you need to factor age into this. Most artists on drugs who eventually quit are also young artists

But that was almost the message of Ray.

"Ray finally kicks heroin, and he never made music again!" lol

Usually, people get off the stuff and find G-d late in their careers after they're not hitting for a while.

Many of them point the finger at the drugs when they fall off while others claim the drugs made them.

I think someone's age, lifestyle, and success have much more to do with their art. The fact is a hungry young artist is going to be very different on that stage and in the studio than an older artist sitting on a pile of records, shows, and money.

^ I think what it does is it takes you outside of your normal modes of thinking...
It gives you another perspective and quite often it also inspires you to do what you consider FUN..which is in the case of musicians is MUSIC...
That combination..
a-The Increased joy of doing what you Love to do..Mixed with,
b- doing it and Thinking "outside the box" often produces something FRESH ! not always..but when it does it tends to be an important captured moment !

i think reality sounds like a perhaps-somewhat-dignified bastard child of "never let me down" and the first tin machine album. i like "searching for water" and the beginning of "she'll drive the big car", and if you catch me in the right mood i can even choke down "new killer star". all the rest is fair to partly dreary to me. shrug

With Prince, it´s probably the other way around...his heyday started to end after that infamous extasy experience in the late 80s. Before that, he was known to be squeaky clean, and after that, the rumors started to spread, which he kind of fueled by saying that he´s open to all kinds of experiences during an interview for a British magazine in 1995, while on tour for the Gold Experience a.k.a The Ultimate Live Experience.
Personally, I think he´s never been into drugs, he´s to fit and healthy and too disciplined for that.
" I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"
