Red Hot Chili Peppers started to get, not worse, but less spontaneous/loud/hard/raw/crude when they got off drugs.

Michael Jackson made awesome music during his pain killers addiction. Which was the mid 90s, ala HIStory.

They also fall off when they become "saved".

I think you need to factor age into this. Most artists on drugs who eventually quit are also young artists

Usually, people get off the stuff and find G-d late in their careers after they're not hitting for a while.

Many of them point the finger at the drugs when they fall off while others claim the drugs made them.

I think someone's age, lifestyle, and success have much more to do with their art. The fact is a hungry young artist is going to be very different on that stage and in the studio than an older artist sitting on a pile of records, shows, and money.

^ I think what it does is it takes you outside of your normal modes of thinking...
It gives you another perspective and quite often it also inspires you to do what you consider FUN..which is in the case of musicians is MUSIC...
That combination..
a-The Increased joy of doing what you Love to do..Mixed with,
b- doing it and Thinking "outside the box" often produces something FRESH ! not always..but when it does it tends to be an important captured moment !
