I heard the Patti Austin version of this song when listening to Pandora and loved it so much I gave it the thumbs up....it seems to show up often when I listen to that station, more than other tracks. I love it. Funky and danceable. I was surprised to see it was originally an Allison Moyet cover. I'm not super familar with her stuff outside of Yaz and the track "Invisible" from the same album. But I guess her version wasn't a single. I heard it and it's good but Patti's is better polished and she puts some spice on it. They are pretty similar though. Allison's voice is great, of course.

Thoughts on either or both versions?

I love Patti Austin

Guess people aren't familar with either version (or have nothing much to say about either). It's funny but the listing of stuff available for Patti Austin is really limited on Itunes so I can't find her verison on there. Also, her album right before the one that features "Honey For the Bees" which was a hit (I think it's called "Every Home Needs One") isn't on there. Guess that label really dropped the ball. I'm not thinking that putting those Patti Austin albums on there would be gangbusters, but I'm sure they would be popular among the stuff from her.

Interestingly,in 1986 Patti was enjoying a hit single with a song called "Gettin Away With Murder".At the same time,there was another version of that song in stores....by Meatloaf!! I've never heard his version but I bet it sounds drastically different than hers,lol.

Interestingly Part 2....in 1981,Patti's remake of the Stylistic's "Stop Look Listen" was receiving some attention on Quiet Storm stations.Only problem is...Angela Boffill's version was out at the exact same time! Poor Patti.Her career has sometimes suffered because of bad timing.

It seems like back in the day, covers were not as controversial as they are now. If the song was good and the artist could do something with it, the would record. Now it's all about samples and frankly, sometimes its not so special.

I think the title of the album is "Getting Away With Murder" that has of course this title track and "Honey For the Bees"....Do you have the album and is it worth looking into? I might look into that Meatloaf verison of "Getting.." just to hear it.
