Levert family wants FBI to investigate death

Singer's behavior raises questions Wednesday, April 02, 2008

Donna J. MillerPlain Dealer Reporter

The family of Sean Levert said Tuesday they will ask the FBI to investigate the sudden death of the 39-year-old R&B singer who fell ill in the Cuyahoga County Jail.

Close relatives also wonder if Levert's bizarre behavior shortly before he died, as reported by the warden, could have been caused by withdrawal from an anxiety medication he had been taking.

Levert was shouting nonsense and pounding on his cell door Sunday night, Warden Kevin McDonough said, so guards moved him to a restraint chair, strapped his wrists to the chair's arms and shackled his feet to the floor.

"We wanted to prevent him from injuring himself," McDonough said.

A video recording shows Levert sitting calmly in the restraint chair, McDonough said. It won't be released until the investigation is complete.

"He was calm in the chair and then began to have shallow breathing," he added. "We called in our medical team and got him to the hospital."

Levert died at 11:57 p.m. at Lutheran Hospital.

Michael Gibson, Levert's first cousin, said Levert never had any kind of crazy outburst before.

FBI spokesman Scott Wilson said agents specializing in civil rights law will meet with Levert's family, then decide whether to investigate.

"If the family wanted to come to us with details regarding his death, we'll take a look at those details and then decide if there should be any action taken," Wilson said.

The county coroner conducted an autopsy Monday, but it may be six weeks before toxicology tests are completed. The coroner's office found no obvious signs of foul play or trauma.

Sean's body remained at the coroner's office early Tuesday, while his wife of 13 years decides whether to have a public or private memorial.

Levert, who lived in Streetsboro, was jailed March 24, when he was found guilty of owing two women $90,000 in child support for three children. Levert also has two children with his wife.

"Sean paid child support, just not through the proper channels," Gibson said. "He'd give $5,000 or more at a time to their mothers. He took his children on tours with him. They spent the summers with him. He was a good father."

Gibson of Richmond Heights found Sean's older brother Gerald, also a famed singer, dead in his bed in November 2006. His death was accidental. He had mixed over-the-counter and prescription medications during an illness.

This should have been Front page news, but we get Tom Cruise, and Britney.

The media is so screwed up.

He died this weekend and Usa Today is just reporting it. (two days later!)

What story was more important? Did K-fed have a splinter or something?

He died just before midnight on Sunday which was too late for the Monday edition of USA Today. (That paper goes to press so early that many of the final sports scores are often blank.) That was why it wasn't reported until Tuesday.

Probably also because he wasn't a major star like his brother gerald.
While it made news on black radio stations across the nation, it just wasn't
going to get the press across the board as gerald's death. I know someone
who watched most of 106 & park monday and said that it wasn't mentioned
on the show then.

I can understand that. The audience at 106 & Park wouldn't know who Sean was. On the other hand, a site like Billboard.com which is read by hardcore music heads reported his death Monday morning.
