Like Hung Up, this will be big (at least on the Hot 100) primarily due to sales. Which, to me, makes it a more legitimate hit than airplay-based tracks. Urban is not going to be spinning this. I think it has a good chance of going Top 5 at Pop radio, and will also do decently on Rhythmic. It might get 50-60 million Pop impressions and 20 million Rhythmic impressions at its peak, which would allow it to go Top 15 on Hot 100 Airplay. Ultimately you need cross-format appeal to really make a major dent (>100 million impressions) with airplay these days. This is doing slightly better than HU with respect to airplay. Even Music peaked around 83 million impressions. Like this song, it had Pop and Rhythmic appeal. It was Top 5 at Pop radio (I forget if it went to #1 or not...something tells me it didn't) and Top 10 at Rhythmic. I'm not sure where the idea comes from that HU struggled in the US. It went Top 20 at Pop radio despite being something completely different than the Rhythmic-based material that is normally played on that format. It was never going to be big at other formats, but it did extremely well for its limited scope. Madonna's biggest radio hits of this decade are Rhythmic-based and she knows this. | |

this brings up an interesting thought I have about Madonna's new album. I predict alot of longtime fans will hate it,but there will be many people outside her fanbase who will like it.It will appeal to many people who haven't bought a Madonna album in years.I could be wrong,but that's the feeling I have. For me the album works much better, because I don't have to hear clumsy shit like the bell at the beginning of Get Together. | |

"4 Minutes" on the other hand - the minute i heard "Freak freaky freaky" from Timbo - lord he is stuck in 2004. I love how the preview clip on iTunes is almost all Justin and like one sung line from M. TRASH is too kind for this tune. as far as people buying this who don't usually like M - I'm not sold on that either. Most kids between 9 and 17 who buy all the Timbaland/Justin/Fergie/Nelly Furtado etc all think of Madonna as a complete fossil - their parents literally were in high school or younger when she was selling to the teenage crowd. And other fans of r&B/hip hop/pop who don't like her in the first place will roll their eyes at this methinks. could be wrong, tho. i hope when she tours she can't perform 4 minutes bc it has too much JT and that during her candy shop she interjects the 'candy shop' beat from 50 cent during the dance break, that'd be dope. I think Mariah dumbed down awhile ago sorry 2 say, im still buying it but its more out of respect, Madonna tends to hold my interest more, though i have a good feeling that this new Tim-fest CD is going to be more of a miss for me like the Tim-fest "duran duran" record was. I think worldwide Madonna will be the bigger seller, i think in the states she will at least hit between 500,000 to a million or so, and Mariah i think will be about 50% of what MIMI did overall, i just hope they are ready for that, because UNIVERSAL actually thinks they can eclipse MIMI sales, no way in hell, its been the 3+ years and the market is 100% worse. It will be interesting to see what Warner does for Madonna promo wise since she is gone after this, obviously they want to sell, but im sure they wont be putting $$ into it, since you dont want her to move on with a "hot streak" going. But lets be honest Mariah is a singles artist, she hasnt done a solid album that anyone can listen to straight through, sorry but its true. Even the biggest MC fans agree, and their fave "Butterfly" when you talk to them they always say its her best, but then tell you which songs they dont like, so to me that has always been her downfall, she has never done a Great record, just a major flaw she has always had. "Candy Shop" grew on me,too.When it first leaked,I thought it was just a silly filler track that probably wouldn't end up on the album anyway.But I started playing it alot and having fun with it.It's really just a fun track,with a crazy hook ("sticky and sweet (dance!)...my sugar is raw").Occasionally,I like when Madonna doesn't take herself too seriously.This is one of those moments.Interestingly,I played this song for a few people who don't even like Madonna and they like this song.I didn't tell them who it was.They're Pharrell fans,though. as far as people buying this who don't usually like M - I'm not sold on that either. I don't know...."4 Minutes" is being played on some stations that normally wouldn't play a new Madonna single.It's getting airplay on stations that didn't play anything from 'Confessions',reaching a wider audience.Undoubtedly,this is due to the Timbaland/Timberlake connection.I'm betting that her new album will have a slightly broader appeal than,say,'American Life' or 'COADF'. i hope when she tours she can't perform 4 minutes bc it has too much JT
I heard that Madonna has asked Pharrell to appear with her during a few live performances,probably for the upcoming promo tour.Perhaps he will sing the Justin lines in "4 Minutes"? during her candy shop I hope she interjects the 'candy shop' beat from 50 cent during the dance break, that'd be dope.

It was Top 5 at Pop radio (I forget if it went to #1 or not...something tells me it didn't) and Top 10 at Rhythmic. I'm not sure where the idea comes from that HU struggled in the US. It went Top 20 at Pop radio despite being something completely different than the Rhythmic-based material that is normally played on that format. It was never going to be big at other formats, but it did extremely well for its limited scope. Madonna's biggest radio hits of this decade are Rhythmic-based and she knows this. It never reached top 40 airplay. peak audience impression for Hung Up - 26million. '4 minutes' already beat that after 1 week. so that's struggling 4 a lead off Madonna single.
