What do you define as jazz? What do you define as rock?
If you define jazz as often improvised, played by highly talented musicians in any beat that doesn't end in 4. And if you define rock as electric guitar distortion and driving drums that make you want to mosh.... then the first group that would come to my mind is Mahavishnu Orchestra. I consider the John Coltrane Quartet to be the greatest rock band ever. They rocked harder than anyone. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

Dude, your avatar is FRIGHTENING! But yeah, Mahavishnu and Miles' later 60's-70s stuff. Those are the best and earliest examples. | |

I'd like to think Ornette Coleman laid some of the groundwork for jazz-rock or electric jazz or whatever "it" is. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016
