In a nod to jonylawson's thread, I want to highlight one of the most funkiest tracks that has ever been unleashed onto the world. Maybe Your Baby is a funk rock tour de force. A funk rock masterpiece. Stevie's Moog bassline in this song is super stoopid in the 9th degree. The sound of it and the way Stevie played it, a keyboard, he brought a physical element from a keyboard that I had never heard brought from anyone else. The way it's played, it's like he was holding it in his hands, like u would a bass guitar. But u knew that was no stringed instrument. But he played it like one. The way he manipulated the notes, the bends, the accents...Stevie made that sound very human. He took that bassline to the depths of Hell and fucked with it down there. Actually, the whole song SOUNDS like it could have been recorded in Hell. It's wicked funky. I've never heard Stevie sound so....menancing. Even Stevie's vocals on this track. I don't know where his head was at doing this but Stevie hit that place that few folks have ever gotten to. Ray Parker's guitar evoked Hendrix cuz Stevie understood that his bassline and a Hendrixian sound belonged together. Do ya'll understand how many songs this one song influenced? Damn near all of the Isley Bros 70's material. If it wasn't for this song, there would be no "Flashlight" and no "More Bounce To The Ounce". Two of the funkiest songs ever. Neither would have existed if it weren't for Maybe Your Bay. There would have been no "hee hee" from Michael Jackson. There would have been no "Shockadelica" a straight tribute to this song, from Prince. So many things would have never even been thought of if it weren't for this song.

This one of Stevie most Funkiest joints to date. And, you're right it predates some Zapp brand Funk.

His multi- layered vocals on this song, which gives a nod to Sly, hits upon that dark, brooding element, which in it's very essence, is the blues. Some Robert Johnson type shit. THAT'S who Stevie was visting when he wrote and cut this. He went to Robert's castle and from the sound of it, Robert advised Stevie on the production. Whazz up Brutha B and Ms. Legs? Killer joint. P did this cover live with Stevie years ago and it was cool, but not as cool as the studio version. Stevie is killin' that clav! You can also where P got his "Camille" voice (lol).

"Talking Book", "America Eats It's Young", "Get On The Goodfoot" and "Superfly" all came out that year..they were funkin' hard in 72!

I've always been somewhat curious to know if he says fuck near the end of this song..I know he says shit baby, and then there's the part right after were it sounds like fuck baby..If it's not, then o' well I'll probably continue to use it as I sing along, but that part always made me think yeah, right on to Stevie, cause I'd have felt the same, if she don't come fuck it and move on.

Yep. I know the part that you're refering to. He's doing what I call "ghosting". P did it a lot on his 1999 album. Something I'm positive that he got from Stevie. U say a curse word but then u shade it with some other sound on the track. The Beatles were probably the first cats to do this in pop music. They did it quite a bit. Probably where Stevie got it from!
