What do you define as jazz? What do you define as rock?

If you define jazz as often improvised, played by highly talented musicians in any beat that doesn't end in 4.

And if you define rock as electric guitar distortion and driving drums that make you want to mosh....

then the first group that would come to my mind is Mahavishnu Orchestra.

I consider the John Coltrane Quartet to be the greatest rock band ever. They rocked harder than anyone.

Miles Davis '69 - '75
Return to Forever
Mahavishnu Orchestra
there are more, but it's really not all that "weird".

But yeah, Mahavishnu and Miles' later 60's-70s stuff. Those are the best and earliest examples.

I'd like to think Ornette Coleman laid some of the groundwork for jazz-rock or electric jazz or whatever "it" is.
