So I went to Dallas to see Ms. Badu last weekend... ...setlist (from memory)
STARTED 2.5 Hours late! Green Eyes (after she said blamed her band for being late "you motherfuckers. makin me look bad") On & On ... & On Me Appletree (totally reworked - sang to a loop of a hip hop beat) Bump It (great tune, but goes on and on and on) Otherside of the Game (why is this the ONE song she does at EVERY show?!??!) Danger (the crowd's favorite) I Want You (she tried to do a fancy dance move on the floor and jammed her heel - then held out her shoe and said "Gucci $559) Soldier (said "in my opinion this is the next single") Woo All Night Long (one verse) Next Lifetime Bag Lady (took the mic into the audience) Band Jam - she spent a good 15 min showcasing the whole band - it was awesome. Honey It was a very intimate, small theater, and a much different vibe - this was some sort of charity event with the audience dressed to the 9s, sitting most of the time - but very personal. it was amazing to see her in her hometown - she was so loose. I can't believe she only sang THREE songs off New Amerykah! What up with that?? Does that mean she doesnt like the new album? Is this a case of a label forcing an artist to release a record when she didn't want to? fiona apple much? hmmmm...less than 3 weeks after the record drops - and only THREE songs? when i caught Jilly at the House of Blues a couple weeks after the Real Thing dropped, almost the entire show was the new record. dont make sense. when i saw badu after WWU came out - she did almost the entire thing. Wow, weird that she only did 3 songs from NA. But otherwise the show was good, I take it? Love the part about the Gucci shoe. I can only imagine. I hope she does more when she comes to my part of country. Been gone for a minute, now I'm back with the jump off

What the hell!
Shows like that make me frustrated when the artist barely plays anything off the new album! I know I've seen her like 5 or 6 times live already, and I plan to see her again when she comes back here, but the last thing I wanna hear is On & On and Next Lifetime again. She really needs to do The Cell live! and I can just imagine the hands swaying in the air if she performed That Hump If you will, so will I

i was dying to hear that hump. and the healer. i thought for sure she'd stick telephone in the encore - plus 'green eyes' is such an odd way to open the show... I'll leave it alone babe...just be me

True and yet it's typical Badu. Expect the unexpected. She needs to open the show with a banger: The Cell, Amerykahn Promise, even Honey. Something to get the crowd wound up. Been gone for a minute, now I'm back with the jump off

Great show! Even with the late start she redeemed herself.
Favorite quote of the night: After trying to roll on the floor bustin' a Martha Graham move, Erykah says: "Ya'll can send the flowers to Baylor Hospital, cuz that's where I'll be since I just fucked up my hip. . . " As for the shoe, her exact remark, after her shoe kept slipping off her foot: "That's what happens when your shoes want to be the star of the show. Gucci $559 at Neiman's" The music was great, the energy improved cuz folks were tired as hell after waiting so long. Her band was good but kept missing cues. All in all a great show especially for $40.

Maybe I'm spoiled by the NPG's tightness but I could tell her band was fucking up. The flutist and the drummer were the really good, though.

She needs Angie Stone's band. They are tight. Her band is a little sloppy at times. I think that's probably due to lack of rehersals or something.

I think that's probably due to lack of rehersals or something. i disagree on the band. i think they rule. i love the improvisation, the sometimes sloppiness, i think 95% of the time they are tight and the other 5% they are sloppy, but overall especially the flutist, the keyboard player, and the new guitar player (a white guy - she called him the "cream in the oreo") are all stellar. and i am in LOVE with the percussion guy! he is fucking out of this world. the percussion he adds to songs that dont have it on the albums take it to a whole nother place. he is the jam. I don't think she was late because of the band. She blamed them as a joke. But several times she would say "Hold On" which must be the cue for them to stop playing like how Prince says, "On the 1." Almost EVERY time it was 1 or 2 people still playing a few notes after she said it. But they were still good just IMO not TIGHT. Also, I've been trying to find an official review of the show but haven't so far. I'm thinking that because she started so late the local music critics couldn't make their deadlines.
