EROTICA. It's Madonna's bravest & best album hands-down, IMO. She's an amazing music artiste. No wonder she got so f*cking p!ssed with songs like Human Nature ("I'm not your bitch, don't hang your shit on me" ) AFTER when the media & press was all . F*CK THE MADONNA HATERS!! I do think her new single "4 Minutes" is pretty crappy, tho. SHIT-HOP alert! P.S: Who has heard the "Rain" Tapes?? [Edited 3/6/08 15:54pm] Stuck like glue!

I've never understood the love for this album and it's appearance in people's Top 5 list.
I love the era, the attitude, the side-projects and the image, but the music and the album don't stand very strongly in their own rights. The title track, Rain and Secret Garden are stellar tracks, but nothing else on the album does anything for me - although maybe on a gay day I'd give Bye Bye Baby a thumbs-up. Dita was nasty-mouthed whore and I was hoping she would have had a bigger influence. Brave? I think Ray Of Light is a far braver album following on from the Evita/Bedtime Stories projects. I like the Erotica period, but for everything except the music. [Edited 3/6/08 16:04pm]

it's a classic. it was a very important album for me. it came out when i was 15, almost 16, and coming to terms with my sexuality, and i was kind of confused and ashamed at the time. this album kind of lives in that feeling, and trascends it.
it's a very cold and detatched sound with a huge amount of heart burning through the icy soundscape. "Half of what I say is meaningless; but I say it so that the other half may reach you." - Kahlil Gibran

Co-sign. It's very uneven IMO. The singles range from good ("Erotica," "Rain") to great ("Bad Girl," "Deeper and Deeper") and there are some good album tracks ("Waiting," "Where Life Begins"), but there are too many songs that don't resonate with me much at all ("Words," "Secret Garden," "Bye Bye Baby," "Thief of Hearts"). Bedtime Stories is solid, Ray of Light is outstanding, but Erotica is just too up and down (suite?). "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis

[Edited 3/6/08 15:54pm] It makes perfect sense that you would have this opinion, since you have taken your screen name from one of the worst Prince albums of all time. “The man who never looks into a newspaper is better informed than he who reads them, inasmuch as he who knows nothing is nearer to truth than he whose mind is filled with falsehoods and errors.”

One of her best albums for "Bad Girl" and "Where Life Begins" alone. NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.

[Edited 3/6/08 16:04pm] It maybe wasn't the boldest step since Madonna was heading into a darker more sexually frank in sound and lyrics with "I'm Breathless" onwards. The album isn't light pop yet keeps some camp in there combined with a sort of NY club sound and even some jazz. It could have been darker lyrically...I get that. It's still pretty incredible. I think I might skew toward "Bedtime Stories" more though since there is something great about the fluidity of that album where "Erotica" can be disjointed (and ruined by adding some shit like "Did You Do It" to the dirty version!).

She looks like a smacked-up Grandma in the artwork/era and for that alone it gets bonus points. Sorely underrated album IMO. **EDIT** That was for Mike above you [Edited 3/7/08 12:24pm]

While I respect what she was tryin' to do with the Sex-Erotica project, the music is cold and too-early 90's for me; I mean, the album is somewhat distant and impenetrable (the opposite of Bedtime Stories), though it's perfect for a one-night stand In fact, this album should be recognised as the official soundtrack for any one-night stand:lol:
Some of the lyrics are terribly tongue-in-check, and there is some clear filler or other songs where Madonna tries to be relevant with lame results (Why it's so hard, In this life, etc.) That said, I love all the singles and other strong album tracks like Waiting, Words or Secret Garden. Not so long ago I made my own Erotica version for the iPod: 1.Erotica 2.Fever 3.Bye bye baby 4.Deeper and deeper 5.Bad Girl 6.Waiting 7.Words 8.Rain 9.Secret Garden 10.Rescue me

EROTICA is cousin to COME. Both have a coldness to them.
I personally love how the fire/ice dichotomy exists within a single song. Like on Madonna's update of "Fever" where her fiery words are stoked within a frigid almost industrial synth landscape. And especially on "Secret Garden" where Madonna's detached delivery is in constant clash with the "fanning of the fire" effects in the instrumentation bringing about a blitheness on the surface that serves as a teasing counterpoint to the sexual urgency underneath. EROTICA is the only album where Madonna was able to consummate the union between her words and music without relying on trends or tying herself up to genres. EROTICA still is Madonna's boldest and strongest artistic statement.
