Well, Sex is the name of the game. And, the ball is the man's court b/c like JB said It's Man's Man's World . So the game, it little different on the female's end when it comes down to sales. It's not only about talent but looks as well.

Exactly. This is his POINT even tho he doesn't specifically say it. It doesn't matter AT ALL what a guy looks like, he can look like the back end of a bus AND bring out crap music and it won't matter so long as it gets lots of airplay and he has abs. That's IT.

But for women they have to be stunning, light skinned if you ask some people, and desirable.

Just look at the age standard in Hollywood. Do you see any women George Clooney's age getting the pure adoration he does for his looks?

True. Jill and Erykah have outlasted dozens of flavours of the month. So will Angie Stone (though she's really not on par with Jill). Oprah, Queen, Whoopi, Sherri, they're more versatile and the source of their appeal is altogether different. But that is for another day.

Personally, I don't think Mary was ever ugly to begin with. But I recall back in the 1990 when Mary and Mariah both made their national debut in the American music industry, Mariah was concern more attractive.

[Edited 3/15/08 22:25pm]

Everybody has their opinion, BUT I think it's the same old shit - lighter & closer to White being deemed as more attractive. Mary is pretty, Mariah is average. I don't think people look @ the features of their faces when they make comments, they're looking @ a bunch of bullshit that influences their decision.

I wish the pics could be more comparable but Mariah's insecure ass won't take a photo head on neutral

Both of them are funny looking in most of their photos. lol

My beef with Mary is that she continues to rock that gawd awful blonde hair. She looked so much better when she was wearing it chestnut brown with the subtle auburn highlights in it.

Mariah always has her head tilted at some flikted angle. And she to, uses too much un-natural looking blonde in up in her big head.

Come on now. You know those are exceptions. Oprah got where she was by being a stereotypical "mammy" image to "mainstream" America; the heavy-set black motherly, maid type who often nourished the children of the rich families back in the day and was the one who gave advice to the teens and acted as the mother while the mother was tanning and getting her nails done. She turned it into a fortune and I respect her for it but her acceptance had nothing to do with her being "pretty". This image was almost always considered non-threatening as women woould never feel physically inferior to this "type", therefore never being threatened.
Erykah is fine as hell, f*ck what y'all say! She also adopted an image that catered to black Afrocentrics. Her rise started within the black community. She was the 2nd artist to do a neosoul record.
Queen Latifah: see: Oprah. Look at her roles in movies. Has she ever played the sexpot? Why not? Big women can be temptresses, too. She always plays an average, hard-working woman. (except in Set It Off)
Jill and Angie (D'Angelo's baby's momma = connected) are both really talented. Again, catering to the "average woman", they are no threat to the non-singing pop princesses and you know damn well none of these women would have been "video girls" (thank God). You know that overall, Snoop is just saying what nobody likes to say aloud. The entertainment business is very superficial and always has been. Its the way it is because people like to see pretty people on television, in videos and in just about any other visual format.

I agree. And Erykah is beautiful, she is just afro-centric which is neither here or there when it comes to beauty. And as for Oprah she was never video girl/wannabe mainstream artist. She is a chat show hostess/ very successful business woman who does a little acting now and again.

I guess I'm losing track of what's being said here (even tried to scroll up to make sure) - are y'all saying these women are ugly??? eek Jill Scott is one of the most gorgeous women I've ever seen (y'all got that size issue w/ her, I don't get it 'cause even if you look @ just her face she's the cutest thing ever)... Erykah is beautiful... Queen Latifah & Oprah are pretty imo, Angie & Sherri do alright & Whoopi is Whoopi. shrug

Maybe y'all are just thinking w/ your dicks in terms of fuckability, maybe it's different for a man talking about a pretty woman in the industry & a woman discussing the same thing. For women the question of pretty is on what scale is their face pleasant or beautiful to look @. While for men it seems to be, "would I fuck that broad?" Which doesn't really address the question... I mean it does, while putting a little extra on it. Because now you not only have to be seen as "pretty" but be a size 2 while you're at it, & be sexually suggestive, & show a lot of skin, & have at least a few closeups of your ass in your video, & said ass BETTER be a half circle that leaps the fuck off your back (unlike that assless Beyonce chick!)... So there's no wonder we have the Rhianna's & Cassie's runnin' round... It's nuts man nuts

On that note, I saw one of the best shows I've ever seen last night in a skanky little club in SF - this girl sang her heart out, gets into those notes that soar around the room & fill you UP! She gave a FUCK about rockin' a simple little ponytail, & was so appreciative of every ounce of love the audience gave up. Her flawless album w/ the killer vocals don't even begin to give her voice justice. Her name is Alice Smith - you'll hear about her soon enough after all these fake no-singin' broads run out of steam. As far as looks, she's pretty cute. But it shouldn't matter so much when she can sing damn near everyone mentioned on this thread under the table in a heartbeat. Oh well, that's the industry...

Personal taste aside, "universal beauty" reigns in the entertainment biz. That's the way it is. Nobody is calling any of the women "ugly" (well, the jury's out on Whoopie) but they are quite PLAIN in comparison to the universal beauty standards of Hollywood, which is what Snoop was talking about. Its expected that a woman be ABOVE AVERAGE LOOKING if a labels is going to drop millions into her and she doesn't have a previous track record of selling on her own or isn't in the business in some other capacity (ala Missy). Its not just men "thinking with their d*cks", its people period. Anytime you are dealing with visual media, be it television, movies or music video, pretty people get ahead faster regardless of talent because the corporate heads are looking to SELL and they know pretty faces sell faster in most cases. Minus rap, where being an attractive male may actually have adverse effects, for the most part attractive people SELL. I didn't make it that way and I sincerely wish talent accounted for more than it does but facts are facts. There will always be exceptions but as it stands, that's the way things are.

hello to all. what I was saying and this is just my theory, is that snoop says that ugly women don't sell records and then he categorizes the ladies who don't sell records as being the chocolate ones and whatever else he said. I don't know if he is right or not because I haven't really seen dark skinned ladies taking on the opportunity or being given the opportunity as often apparently to sing and sell records except angie and fantazia pretty much. and they seem to be doing pretty good. they took control and made it happen. also I mentioned the other ladies because they are chocolate and are doing well. they "ain't trippin". they are being what god made them to be and I don't see any compromises made since they have been in the business, some have had to struggle but they didn't have to conform much. the lighter ones or according to snoop the pretty ones, since snoop says the pretty ones probably have to do a lot behind the scenes and it seems to me that they have gotten tucks and stuff to make sure their game keeps them paid. we all know mariah did. Truth of the matter is, they probably should have done like angie and fantasia and did them naturally. I am not knocking anyone's theory. I refuse to believe that angie and fantasia are capitalizing off of mamies and pickeniny stereotypes to make money. they are naturally built that way, you can't change their skin tone, and they get paid. and it comes off to me that snoop is saying these skin toned ladies are the ugly ones who don't sell records. he ain't mentioning no names but these two are the ones I could think of. they are not ugly. they are paid being what they ain't trippin on which is being chocolate. yeah beauty sells records light whatever. but the chocolate ones ain't trippin and paranoid about keeping up with that and they sell. peace til next time.

I hope this helps explain what I am saying in my posts.

In addition to looks which everyone has different tastes on, I really hate how not only do the women have to be damn-near supermodels but have to be dressed to the nines while the guys who are grown men, wear oversized Tshirts, sagging jeans, doo-rags and caps, medallions and sneakers and want model chicks only.

Being darker doesn't doom record sales. If you're dark-skinned and look like Tatiana Ali, Garcelle Beauvais or Meagan Good you could still sell off looks IF THE RECORD LABEL PUMPS MONEY INTO YOUR PROJECT. Weight is an issue as much as if not more so than skin tone with the entertainment business. Someone who looks Kelly Rowland would probably get called for commercials more than someone who looks like Jill Scott, who is lighter but weighs more. There's a lot of weight discrimination in the entertainment industry and its pretty blatant. As to the attractiveness factor, there is usually plain-pretty (like Sandra Bullock) to barbie beauty (Taylor Swift) and different variations. There are always exceptions but some of you point out exceptions as if they are the rule when I could easily list at least 5 to 1 for every exception on television, in music videos and movies. For every Macy Gray, there are at least 8-10 Myas and for every Kathy Bates there are ten Scarlett Johanssons. That's no accident but years of research and the BUSINESS isn't going to stray from it unless it stops making them money. It never will because pretty people sell. It just a fact of life.

hello to all. what I was saying and this is just my theory, is that snoop says that ugly women don't sell records and then he categorizes the ladies who don't sell records as being the chocolate ones and whatever else he said.

For a genre that absolutely does not give a damn about instruments and rhythm and the fans defend it by saying...."listen to what they are saying and how great the lyrics are".....it sounds more like a fucking story and soap opera to me because it sure as hell ain't music, that's for damn sure.

Hip hop is 95% trash, 4% shit and 1% worth any of my time and LESS of my money.

falloff

Thank you for that.
