You know when is the only time I don't like ugly women on a product?
Porn.
For sum reason, I enjoy pretty women in my porn.
I dunno why.
I just do.

I don't mind ugly women in porn, as long as they are behind the camera or they are positioned ass-first in front of the camera.

As far as Mary J. is concerned, I bet you take that make-up off and you have one ugly bitch.

Isn't it great that Snoop is now a role-model with his "Fatherhood" reality show? Hey kids out there.....smoke some weed, call women bitches and have tons of kids just like Snoop!! You too can be famous!

No way! It's the opposite way round. She tried to make herself look more 'black' as time went on. Mariah didn't look ethnic at all when she first started out (she still doesn't but you know). She started getting fake tans and a fuller body when it came in fashion. And the hair she started out with is still 'white'. I've never seen a black person with that texture hair naturally. It's very common for white people to have that kind of hair, so her straightening and making it blonde doesnt make it any whiter.

Not true. Mariah's "blackness" were a lot more difficult to hide in her earlier years. The family genes on her father's side are a little more dominant.

[Edited 3/16/08 4:50am]

She looks the same in those pictures actually. I'm sorry I just don't see Mariah as black. I know it's a fact that she has african blood, but I'm not the type of person who believes the 1 drop rule. A black person who has a drop of white blood whos looks black isn't considered white, and i dont consider a person who's mainly white who looks white who has a drop of black blood to be black. I don't get why she gets brought into these black/white topics. I don't think you can make a case for her in the same way you can for Beyonce as being part of this racist 'people only like light skinned blacks' thing. People who don't know her background (which is basically everybody) just think of her as a white woman. They judge her the same way they judge other white celebrities.

Isel

Question: was there ever a time when ugly women could sell records before MTV? To me, it stands to reason MTV has marketed more image than substance.

But before MTV.. I was just wondering.. To me, image has always been necessary.. If a singer is ugly but is edgy.. well the edginess makes up for ugliness.

I just think commercial performing artists.. whether in music or elsewhere become products of sorts... It seems only on the stage where maybe talent prevails? However.. it sure doesn't hurt to be good-looking and/or charismatic and talented on stage either..

While Snoop may be speaking the truth the one thing that really stood out to me is his sudden mentioning of 'chocolate' and 'dark-skinned' women as if its synonymous with ugly. I guess for him and for many others for that matter, it is.

“You beautiful on the inside, baby. What I wanna say to go on top of that, to the chocolate women, the dark-skinned women, I love ya’ll. I got a chocolate daughter at home. I always tell her chocolate is the best thing in the world….“

I found that part of his comment interesting too.
I think deep down he knows how dark-skinned black women are viewed in this society...as less attractive than a white woman, latina or a light-skinned black woman. He's guilty of it himself.

Oh don't worry. The public knows a lot better now than they did in 1990.

When they look at Madonna, they know for a fact she's white. When they look at Mariah, they know for a fact that she's biracial. And then they listen to the vocal performances of both women, they know that Mariah is a better vocalist because physical appearances isn't a factor. It's all about singing skills.

I'm not so sure that Snoop was associating dark-skinned with ugly as he was just speaking as he normally does. There has been much conversation (probably between Snoop and his wife as well) about dark-skinned women having a smaller role in rap music videos. Even on that "video vixens" special they did a couple of years ago the topic came up. My first thought when reading it was "why bring up dark-skinned women?" as well but then I remembered where it was coming from and chalked it up to the fact that Snoop is probably used to qualifying everything he says on the topic with statements like that.
There is also some truth even within the context of that as well. You don't see a lot of white women in rap music videos either. There seems to be more value in being racially ambiguous when it comes to certain aspects of the entertainment industry. Rap videos is one of those areas. Commercials is another one.

Well knowing a few "rap video girls" or at least models who got their start in this genre to that extent is it ture. But i think the reasoning behind it tends to be that the world is becoming more racially mixed, i mean you see racially mixed couples everywhere, like all other "boundaries" the "date only your race" has been put to rest, though in certain religions its not allowed. So as with most things the media is a reflection of the worlds thoughts. A good friend of mine that i talk to alot Daphne Joy who works on Mtv's Wild n Out, has done about 20 videos already, and she says its all because she is viewed as being different she is half filipino and puerto rican, and has a perfect look, Imagine Mayte only 10,000 times better. She has been called for videos by Ne-yo,the Dream,Chingy,Pitbull etc... she says she gets about 20 calls a week but has to throw most away because, budget wise, no one wants to pay these girls. But in talking to her she clearly says that racially mixed girls are almost all you will see on the sets of these videos, at least in the LEADING roles, even the "white" girls you see are mixed racially.

Where are the racially mixed men? All the interracial couples out there aren't just having girls. Why isn't there a demand for racially mixed men?
I'll tell you why, because there is a double standard. A black woman mixed with black and black, is not deemed attractive. She has to be black and fill in the blank. It's acceptable for a black man to be dark and it not be a hinderance, but not so for a black woman. Her dark skinned better be backed-up with racially ambiguous features and natuarally long, straight hair.

I sure hope Snoop prepares "Choc" for the harsh realities of the business, especially since it seems that she may want to be a singer.

I saw his daughter on his fatherhood show and she was using an umbrella to shield herself from the sun whilst she was playing soccer with David Beckham whereas her brothers were just playing in the sun without a care in the world. It like she already knows at such a tender age how dark-skinned girls are viewed in society.

Well the whole world is a double standard. A male can take off his shirt, like an usher or Justin and its Sexy, a woman does it and shes a ho and a slut. I think there isnt a demand for racially mixed men mainly because there isnt a real market in males, i mean lets be real already. Whos selling records and magazines and airtime, Britney,Kim Kardashian,Beyonce,Mariah,Madonna etc...for every Justin timberlake selling you have 25 females, it is a female dominated industry for the most part, but the funny thing is that Rock and Rap are the most sexist genres, neither really have any female presence, so there you have more double standards. Females are used to sell a rap video and single, cause lets be real, thats the only reason they get made anymore, to see hot women, and for these dudes to try and hook up on set, but the rap industry for the most part has almost NO females in a high position.

So far, Lil'Kim, Trina, & Missy were the last three at that high position. I really don't notice any female emcees at that spot currently.

Seriously, and I'm not saying this because of her complexion, that little girl is not Snoop's baby.

There's a story I read from the divorce era where it said that Tommy insisted on Mariah to wear dark clothes and hide her right(or left?) side from the camera because her "black" features were pronounced that way and he didn't want 'em showing.

It explains why she rarely made a profile image,,,,,and it caused more damage to her already frail self-security. I could never fault Mariah for being so inscure, nobody wants to be that way.

Again, it goes back the controversy of Mariah's debut album. It might have been Tommy's idea for Mariah's hair to "block" a portion of her nose. When it comes to trying to figure out anyone's racial classification, the nose never lies.

Say what you will about that public fall out between Michael Jackson & Tommy Mottola. But for once, I think Michael (of all people with his own skin problem) might had a point about Tommy's views on race when we take pop marketing in consideration.

Mariah said on Larry King that Michael's claims of Tommy being racist weren't too far from the tree

I was just reminded after seeing this video, THIS is how Keyshia looked when she came out:

Her look wasn't that bad back then. She just had an odd hair color and tats.
also, her two friends gain her a lot of attention as well.

Snoop is right. The industry cares about your ability to look good in a video, ride a nice beat with a catchy hook, and from there create multiple income streams. Rihanna will do that better than scores of more accomplished and talented singers. And then Rihanna will disappear, and the next one-named, thin-voiced vixen will take her place. That's the way it's been since Janet and Madonna first got their shine on, and it will remain that way until the audience demands more.

Ella Fitzgerald would be nothing but a backup singer today.
