... so, to continue with my train of thought...

If you study his career, Snoop really should say, "Ugly women don't sell my records."

What's not true about what he said?

I love how if any other person had said this and maybe used a different word besides "ugly", the entire org would be praising them, putting quotes from the speech in their signature and the artist would be the new flavour of the month.

But since Snoops's a rapper suddenly his (correct!) opinions go out the window.

It's the same with Kanye West.

It seems like if any rapper speaks up about something, even worse if they're RIGHT, the org, and any other blog, shoots them down.

I don't agree with the majority of Snoops' lyrics and I do think he's sold out quite a bit but damn, I'm a lot more interested in rappers who have something to say (Snoop Kanye etc) than ones who are happy to tow the line like Soulja Boy and Akon.

I still don't get how he's wrong about any of what he said?

The women in the videos CHOOSE to be seen that way. No one is forcing them to do anything. It's their choice and really, what dude is gonna turn down half naked beautiful women in their videos? I wish more men WOULD but we gotta be realistic here!

When's the last time a non-supermodel looking woman made it to the top of the charts or recieved worldwide recognition?

Don't give me that Wino crap, she can still look good with enough makeup.

Everything Snoop said is true, for some reason the Org can't handle it.

.. the only beef i have with him is the use of this term .. it's bad enough that singers know they're stereotyped in the industry, but why did he also have to dig in with 'that' word.. talking about he loves them too... i dont think certain singers would receive that as love.. .. and yeah we know some are less attractive.. but at least that doesnt sound insulting..

Snoop's pimp schtick is misogynistic to me, so I stand by my original post about him being the wrong person to interview about respect between the sexes.

Snoop Dog says: Ugly Women Don't Sell Records

He came right out and said it.
jacked from Miss Info

Here’s a taste of Snoop’s kooky stream of consciousness rant on women, thanks to the friends at BET.com’s Hip Hop Vs. America blog.

How many ugly women selling records? None! Only the pretty ones sell records. Beyonce, Mary J, Keyshia Cole, the ugly ones don’t sell. I ain’t gon say no names, but they don’t sell records. They just be singing their little hearts out, but they don’t get no sales, cause they ugly. Now, that’s my fault? I can see this on TV now: ‘Snoop Dogg called me, ugly.’ You beautiful on the inside, baby. What I wanna say to go on top of that, to the chocolate women, the dark-skinned women, I love ya’ll. I got a chocolate daughter at home. I always tell her chocolate is the best thing in the world….

and then Snoop on women in hip hop videos….

Hip-hop is not the stories. It’s not a soap opera. Hip-hop is not ‘The View.’ It’s not…’The Oprah Winfrey Show.’ Hip-hop is what it is. We have our certain views on women the way we do. It’s like Playboy. Do anybody got something to say about the way Playboy view women? They take their shirt off and show their t**ties. That’s the first way to get into Playboy. You gotta show Hugh Heffner your t**ties if you wanna get in Playboy. There’s nothing degrading about that, but at the same time, when we show women in videos, they have their clothes on. We don’t play videos on BET with women naked; we can’t get away with that. But it’s degrading what we’re doing, when in actuality, we’re giving these women a chance to shine. Now, if these women would become directors and depict women in a different light, then that would give them a different light as far as the way people view them.

Snoop is right to an extent.

Non-attractive women haven't sold enough records since the 1970's.

But yet, the real problem now is that most of the attractive women of the 2000's are mostly lip-syncing on stage and/or their vocal recording are overproduced in the studio.

So I say let give the non-attractive women their credit for trying to keep real live vocal performances alive
. cool

As bluntly as he put it (no pun intended), he is correct. When was the last time we saw an actual UNATTRACTIVE female in pop music that didn't come from out of left field? You have to excuse people who come from American Idol or other "contest shows" because they aren't bred and hand picked by record labels. The American pop music market demands that the women be acceptably slightly above average to beautiful in terms of looks. Women are usually at least "t.v. pretty". She doesn't have to be a Miss Universe winner but she has to be acceptable enough to look like she belongs on television. We've had many discussions about this very thing on the org; don't hate the message just because Snoop Dogg said it. Its still the truth. Plain pretty = accepted. Plain = rejected. The entertainment business has always been superficial but since Mtv and the demand for music videos has increased, the superficiality has increased also. There are a few exceptions but there are still strict guidelines that labels follow. They want maximum earning potential and studies have shown that pretty people sell more so....that's how they play it.

Personally, I don't think Mary was ever ugly to begin with. But I recall back in the 1990 when Mary and Mariah both made their national debut in the American music industry, Mariah was concern more attractive.

Everybody has their opinion, BUT I think it's the same old shit - lighter & closer to White being deemed as more attractive. Mary is pretty, Mariah is average. I don't think people look @ the features of their faces when they make comments, they're looking @ a bunch of bullshit that influences their decision.

I wish the pics could be more comparable but Mariah's insecure ass won't take a photo head on neutral

But its all irrelevant, look at your RB males, why the hell does Usher sell? Because he is this amazing talent never before seen? No because he takes off his shirt and girls go nuts. the funny thing about people like MC and Mary J, they have mostly FEMALE audiences not male, Males % wise do not invest more in females music than Females do. True Snoop has points, but he is a Pimp anyway so its a double standard, also he should be talking about how his genre has become the Biggest joke yet, come on Snoop, do a commentary on the state of Rap and whats going on.

Damn shame, but that's truth. I've never thought Mariah Carey was that great looking. She has great legs I'll give her that but would I say she's beautiful? Nope. Now I know some people think Mary is a little rough around the edges and harsh looking at times perhaps but to me she is prettier than Mariah and I've always thought she had great bone structure.

The funny thing about Mariah though is that when she started out she looked more "ethnic". Over the years however her appearence changed drastically.

My personal taste is neither Mariah nor Mary J. Neither of them are all that cute to me. I do understand that personal taste aside, they are both marketable. Its women who look like Macy Gray and Fantasia that have a hard time with the pop crowd. People mentioned Missy but Missy didn't come into the industry as a singer/rapper but as a writer and she wrote a lot of songs for artists before her own success. There's always room for an exception or two here and there but as the business has become more corporate, its become more formulated. That's whey there's a bunch of shit music sung by a bunch of post-teen airheads. I mentioned American Idol earlier. Look at who's successful from that show. Kelly Clarkston and Carrie Underwood are both "lookers" by television definition. They have also had the most pop success. Its messed up but its the way it is. Oh, and women like Mary J. are targeted towards niche audiences. Mary is a reflection of the typical "chick from the hood that made good" success story and is marketed directly to young black girls. She's "sassy" and sings about how black men have done her wrong. That's exactly what the execs want. Keyshia Cole is just an extension of the "character" marketed specifically to women of a certain demographic. They can't be "beautiful" by universal standards because then they wouldn't appeal to the average woman which they are being marketed to. They are in a sense the opposite of Taylor Swift, who looks like someone brought a barbie doll to life. She represents the typical pop chick even though her audience is country, which is basically soft rock these days. Marketing is a delicate process and best believe none of the "characters" on the charts are there by accident. Nowadays you have to fit an image to get a company to dump millions of dollars into you. You have to be able to sell MERCHANDISE, not just CDs. Snoop knows this and he just stated it very crudely. He himself is a marketing plot. As Threadbare mentioned earlier, he has his "pimp" image, which he crafted after gangsterisms died out.

The album covers tells the story. Watch carefully:

1990 (more "ethnic")

1995 (the same, just different facial make-up)

1996 (slow body changes began here)

1998

1999

2000

Basically, Mariah was "ethnic" looking for about 6 years within her career. I think it was in 1996-97 that some people started to notice a change.

There's a story I read from the divorce era where it said that Tommy insisted on Mariah to wear dark clothes and hide her right(or left?) side from the camera because her "black" features were pronounced that way and he didn't want 'em showing.

It explains why she rarely made a profile image,,,,,and it caused more damage to her already frail self-security. I could never fault Mariah for being so inscure, nobody wants to be that way.

Actually, I skip the albums from 1991-94 on purpose because there weren't any changes with Mariah's features from the 1990 debut.

EDIT: To answer you question specifically, the debut album cover is Mariah as a full grown version of how she always look since her high school years. In her high school year book, Mariah looked more like the average light-skinned black woman than she ever did her whole adulthood.

Again, it goes back the controversy of Mariah's debut album. It might have been Tommy's idea for Mariah's hair to "block" a portion of her nose. When it comes to trying to figure out anyone's racial classification, the nose never lies.

Say what you will about that public fall out between Michael Jackson & Tommy Mottola. But for once, I think Michael (of all people with his own skin problem) might had a point about Tommy's views on race when we take pop marketing in consideration.

No way! It's the opposite way round. She tried to make herself look more 'black' as time went on. Mariah didn't look ethnic at all when she first started out (she still doesn't but you know). She started getting fake tans and a fuller body when it came in fashion. And the hair she started out with is still 'white'. I've never seen a black person with that texture hair naturally. It's very common for white people to have that kind of hair, so her straightening and making it blonde doesnt make it any whiter.

Not true. Mariah's "blackness" were a lot more difficult to hide in her earlier years. The family genes on her father's side are a little more dominant.
