Nah, Umbrella is a p*ssy-power song. I'm not saying it's a masterpiece of meaning, but it does have a certain pop-feminist slant--flips the script on decades of dick metaphors in popular music.

its so weird how the big wigs behind the scenes think in terms of marketing music. I have always been attracted to music that challenged me or was different than what I normally listened to or heard on radio. I guess I wouldnt be the person that the marketing team would factor in as a target audience

Count me in too. I know they'd turn me down too since I'm not entertained by who they think will be in my peer group, lol.

As bluntly as he put it (no pun intended), he is correct. When was the last time we saw an actual UNATTRACTIVE female in pop music that didn't come from out of left field? You have to excuse people who come from American Idol or other "contest shows" because they aren't bred and hand picked by record labels. The American pop music market demands that the women be acceptably slightly above average to beautiful in terms of looks. Women are usually at least "t.v. pretty". She doesn't have to be a Miss Universe winner but she has to be acceptable enough to look like she belongs on television. We've had many discussions about this very thing on the org; don't hate the message just because Snoop Dogg said it. Its still the truth. Plain pretty = accepted. Plain = rejected. The entertainment business has always been superficial but since Mtv and the demand for music videos has increased, the superficiality has increased also. There are a few exceptions but there are still strict guidelines that labels follow. They want maximum earning potential and studies have shown that pretty people sell more so....that's how they play it.

He didn't lie shrug and as much as folks would want to carry on with the holier-than-thou attitude, folks in here tear down people's looks in a mug,,,so the whole double standard in this thread seems kinda funny to me.

ThreadBare

I don't think anyone is disagreeing with Snoop's observation about pretty women being valued way more highly by the music industry, as far as artists go.

My quibble is that Snoop is someone who has made exploiting women the cornerstone of his videos and, by extension, a significant part of his career. My problem wasn't with his repeating an undeniable truth in the industry (if not the world).

It was with his weak excuses for exploiting women and for his suggestion that he doesn't.
