Alfred McCoy Tyner born December 11 , 1938 is a jazz pianist from Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , known for his work with the John Coltrane Quartet and a long solo career. Before he played with the John Coltrane Quartet , he was the first pianist to played with Benny Golson and Art Farmer's Jazztet. The only albums I have from him was when he was on Impulse and Blue Note.

He's come up a few times but as you must know, Jazz is a hard sell here.
Recently, he's been mentioned in some posts I did on Azar Lawrence performances in here in L.A.

Some of his albums I have...

...that I can remember at the moment.

And one of my favorites...

...Fly With The Wind has him in a setting with strings and allows a more melodic McCoy.

Now you might think this would blunt the power of his playing.
Nothing can blunt the power of McCoy Tyner.

Especially...

Billy Cobham - drums
Ron Carter - bass
Hubert Laws - flute

...with this kind of support.

He's a part of the Wall of Fame...

...in my office. (lower right corner)

This is the only album i have of his solo work, but being that John Gilmore is playing tenor on it, i'd place money on this being some one of his best.

lol

i'm really only familiar with his work with Coltrane, but i do know that Coltrane let him go because his bangin' on the keys was crowding the music. my man John needed some more room to stretch out. smile

i'm also trying to figure out who is on your wall of fame:

I see:

Miles
Mingus
Ornette
Dizzy
Dolphy?
Roy/Milt?

the rest i can't really make out.

McCoy's the shit! And apparently many current jazz pianists think so as many of them seem to sound like a combination of McCoy Tyner, Herbie Hancock, and Bill Evans.

You're most welcome and i'm very flattered.
There's quite a few folks posting good stuff here.

It's pretty hard to find something by McCoy Tyner that's not good.
His standards are pretty high even though he knows that everyone's not paying attention.

Actually my understanding is that Elvin Jones and McCoy Tyner both left Coltrane's band after Ascension because they didn't like the more free/avant-garde direction coltrane was going in. In a sense though, they represented "limits" on Coltrane's music, and Trane was all about transcending limits. Personally there's a lot of free/avant-garde jazz that I like quite a bit, but I understand that it can be an acquired taste at best for people and I can understand how musicians who were grounded in structured harmony and rhythm would think that "free improv" was just an excuse to play crazy noise. In any case, McCoy and Elvin were great musicians and in a sense those guys both went as far as you could go with their respective instruments without going "out".

Anyway, back on the subject of the main man. I like a lot of McCoy's solo stuff, and in fact I think that his solo stuff is a better showcase for his chops than even a lot of the stuff with Trane (for one thing I think his piano was more prominent in the mixing on his solo stuff generally and some of it also had better sound quality than much of Coltrane's stuff IMHO). Sahara, Sama Layuca, tender moments, the real mccoy, expansions and Enlightenment are my faves of his. I think Mccoy also played on some of Wayne Shorter's seminal albums as well although I'm not sure which ones off the top of my head.

Thing is, some jazz cannot be a quick listen or background music...maybe if you read some background on the piece - how/why/what....will you give it another chance, please?

He best get his 'people' to talk to the calendar 'people' to talk to the publisher's 'people' and set them straight on his status!

On second thought, I think it was John only that played with McCoy Tyner...I do not correspond with Chris, but I will ask John and see if he has some interesting stuff to say.
