Duffy. The REAL Dusty Springfield Resurrection. And I love her to bits. Great debut album; top spots in UK's Single AND album lists.
I know I am late to jump the bandwagon.

And no, of course, she ain't even CLOSE to Dusty levels, but she is channelling alot of what I like about Dusty. The sound. The scope.

I love the album. Same here. Good thread, mate! Nooooo!!! Because I am stoubbourn and resistent to change I HATE you and Sex for liking this record. I've been overloaded with this girl for months and I can't seem to embrace this album. I don't wanna like it It would probably help if every country in the EU wasn't doing a Dusty resurrection these days. If you guys could see whats going on over here you'd hate it. There were always young singers and djs here doing retro stuff for the last 20 years but it was quiet...underground. Now everytime you turn on the tv or radio there's a Dusty knock-off or some chick (doing a piss poor job of) trying to duplicate the Brill Building sound .I feel like if I give in to Duffy, that's just going to be the beginning of the end! I'll take a minute to regroup and reconsider though...I just always get bent out of shape when I see musicians arriving on some sort of musical "wave"

Duffy is virtually unknown here (her show on the 17th in a very small venue is not even sold out yet) as is every retro U.K. singer not named Amy Winehouse. It's still a novelty to me so I'm not tired of her yet.

I like her current single. It's one of the better thangs to trouble the British charts in recent times (which in a way ain't sayin' much, I know ).
I can't go for the Dusty comparison; too much pressure on the poor girl Duffy for starters. And imho, nobody should be called a true 'soul singer' until they are at least 30, by which age they should gathered some living time and experience of life, which would ideally come out in the way they sing their songs. Anybody can do all the wailin' and vocal showboating that characterises the 'soul singer'but for me, 'soul', however it be defined, is hard earned through both pleasure and pain. . In short, if she's good now, she'll be even better in 10 years time, whether or not the pop charts care.

Like the Blues, you have to feel Soul and breath in order to sing and communicate to the audience. One thing about it, you can't fake your commitment to the music form, just like Funk & Jazz.

I didn't start any of the previous Duffy threads. Huey's seems to be the most successful: http://prince.org/msg/8/256672 http://prince.org/msg/8/259980 http://prince.org/msg/8/263719 I post the same thing on every thread.

The Duffy show in NYC on the 17th is indeed now SOLD OUT. I was wondering what was taking Americans so long.
