Most of the time, I don't think samplers want to give an hommage to a previous artist, it is all about the money.

Someone mentioned a track featuring on Erykah Badu's new album called American promise, it is initially from a band called Ramp, she did not change the original version that much, she added a few vocals and effects. I just hope that people will check the original. She also samples "My people" but she adds sth new to it.

We all know that coming with sth musically brand new is very hard; but it is possible (I don't have the talent for it but I won't be tempted to use someone else's work). Showing musical influences and what an artist likes through his music is great because you learn something new. My only way to play hommage to previous artist is to play their music and share it with other people cool

To be honest I haven't noticed a Flashlight bassline on her album? confuse

Maybe it's the Salt N Pepa "I'll Take Your Man" bassline??

The bassline in "That Hump" is from Flashlight slowed down. Take a listen.
Combined with a verse from a Switch track.....how original.

Most of the time, I think sampling is very manipulative, it plays with our musical memory. If an old beat or track has been sampled and was successful, the new one will sell, as people will recognize it consciously or unconsciously.
What make us like a new sampled track is often the old version razz

very true
because I can remember
hearing Ashanti's "Foolish" on the radio
and instantly wanting to know
who this broad was...

Biggie's usage of "Stay With Me"
will forever be a classic
and even when I hear the original
it takes me back to like 1995
when that remix was all the rave

you instantly think of that houseparty
in Brooklyn where the best of the best
were in attendance...
man I really miss videos like that
"be who you are and say what you feel
because those who mind don't matter
and those who matter don't mind."

That is why they do it.....and not having the skill/talent 2 create something ORGINAL.

It's not creative or original!!!! P-Diddy was notorious for doing it. The Willinium album, too. (Did I spell that right?)

This is an Issue that I am fighting with myself about at the moment..
If I had to cut all the bullshit out and just get straight to the point..I would say..
I DONT respect people that cant play at all and are using over obvious samples to make millions of dollars in the "MUSIC" industry...

I DO respect people that have actual musical talent.."can play a bass..can play a guitar..can play keys..ect.."
But, chooses to sample in a tasteful way "SOUNDS"
a guitar played into a modern digital system wont sound like a guitar played through an amp and recorded on analog Tape !

If a dude decided to sample something with "the sound" of a vintage recording..but,he was fully capable of doing it himself but didnt have the means to get it dont in the proper way "to get the SOUND of a sample" then thats ok with me..I can feel that dudes pain !
Vinyl is a beautiful thing and Tape + Tape compression is a beautiful thing ! cool
