IN RAINBOWS//Radiohead

I know I'm prolly like super duper late
but I just copped this album

along with the new Gnarls Barkley
and err... I LIKE THIS SHIT!!

I asked the guy @ Target had he heard it
he said no, but that he bought one
and that his friends all said it was
pretty good...

this was a blind buy
I love the artwork
so I gave in to it...

I sampled some of it
on my way back to work
and I LIKE IT ALOT!!!

any other RADIOHEAD fans?
I've heard OF them...
but never heard any of their stuff
until just now...

where should I start in their catalog?
the guy also mentioned how they
change up the sound alot...
some records are more electronica based
and others more rock based...
I like a mixture of both
but lean more towards the electro stuff...

where should I start?

Skip the first album (Pablo Honey) altogether. You can come back to it later if you want.

Their most rock-influenced album is the second one, The Bends. It's my favorite.

They started going more towards electronic sounds by the fourth album, Kid A.

Their most critically acclaimed album is the third one, OK Computer. It's probably where you should start because it strikes the best balance between their mainstream and "weirder" sides.

Judging from what I know of your taste, I actually think In Rainbows will end up being your favorite. You should track down the bonus disc.

It was released as part of the boxed set they were selling online. You can probably find it on the internet... lurking

You're welcome! This one is already my 3rd-favorite behind The Bends and OK Computer.

I'm another RadioH fan here, I can vouch for most of the comments so far. What's funny to me is how a group like this can have their major label debut album, Pablo HONEY , so reviled among most fans - just look past Creep - and come back with such strength on their next two albums, it must be a testament to their great song writing. Just based on all the available albums that are out, I rank them this way:

1. OK C
2. KID A
3. The Bends
4. Amnesiac
5. In Rain
6. Hail To
7. Have yet to listen to Pablo, after all this time.

Kid A is an acquired taste, but it's incredibly tight and well edited/tracked. How To Disappear Completely is probably one of the most unnerving songs they've done IMO. I'm glad they released Amnesiac as a second album rather than lumping into Kid A, cuz it would have been dismissed as a bloated double album.

OK Computer is basically a 90s Dark Side Of The Moon. Lucky is one of my favorite tracks off of it.

The Bends is their most "rock" album. It's also worth scoring the Maxi for High & Dry for the non-album track Maquiladora.

It's on the iTunes Store now. Apparently, they've asked retail stores to put it out as soon as they get their shipment. I haven't seen it anywhere in my area.

I agree with the general sentiment that Pablo Honey is a complete waste of time. Only creep is worthy and I LOVE that song to death! Amazing that a band that had such a shitty first album could go on to such greatness.

My suggestion with OK computer AND kidA and Amnesiac, don't try and control this shit. Like a lucid dream, you gotta go with your gut and your instincts and not fight the flow nod

I'm a Radiohead diehard.

Pablo Honey isn't even true Radiohead. They hadn't found themselves yet on this album, and it's basically a forgettable collection of standard rock with some elements of punk.

They really came into their own on The Bends. This is classic angst-ridden rock, with Thom's trademark gloomy lyrical musings on rejection and alienation really starting to shine. Every song is rife with melodic hooks and depth. This is probably their most accessible album.

OK Computer is their most overwhelming album. By far, it is their most epic, most sprawling, and absolutely most sinister album ever. The sheer atmosphere of isolation and suffocative misery is powerful all over the album. If you liked the book 1984, this is basically a musical interpretation of that.

Kid A is their most challenging work. There are very few readily discernible hooks to be found. It's more of a meditative work that you need to sit down and listen carefully to in its entirety. Guitars are gone. Minimalist melodies and electronic effects in the form of blips and bleeps are in. The music is still brilliant, but it's more abstract.

Amnesiac is a more musical Kid A, but it's inconsistent compared to the last three. These tracks were recorded at the same time as the ones on Kid A, but the band left out some absolute classics for some meandering songs instead. After three classics, this one is disappointing.

Hail to the Thief has a few brilliant tracks (this is Radiohead afterall), but it's a little overblown and stale sounding at times. A lot of the keyboard sounds were mixed too loudly, so it tends to sound overproduced in places, and the band just sounded like it was kind of trudging along.

In Rainbows sounds like a band that is totally refreshed. I love it. Every song is vibrant and wonderfully crafted. It's prime Radiohead all over. Interestingly, this is their most relationship-oriented album yet, as well as their most mellow.
The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

an

I don't consider myself a huge fan but saw them live in '98 and it's the best show I've seen apart from Prince.

Pablo Honey isn't terrible. They just really stepped it up for The Bends, which is a brilliant album. I'd recommend the Live at the astoria DVD which has a number of Pablo Honey songs on there and you can judge for yourself. The performance from this show of My Iron Lung (their best song??) was released on The Bends. I liked OK Computer alot but didn't connect with it as much as The Bends, and I really liked Kid A and Amnesiac but for some reason just ignored Hail To The Thief. The raves about In Rainbows haven't tempted me for whatever reason, I'll probably pick it up at some point though.

Get 'Ok Computer' first and start right away with 'Let Down'. That song is pur genius, IMO. The lyrics, the vocals, the music, everyhing.

The way the cymbals kick in and he sings: "One day I'm going to grow wings. Chemical reaction. Hystericals & useless. Hysterical and let down and hanging around. Crushed like a bug in the ground..." makes me tear up. And that never happens to me.

The song builds to a thrilling climax, too. I love when his voice splits.

I want to hear the bonus disc, too. But, I'm the lone R'head fan, it seems, who's missed out on most of the b-sides.

"All I Need," as I have told CarrieMPLS for months to get her to buy the thing, is one of the best songs that I'd heard in 2007. I love their stuff.

Not really. Thom said from the start that they'd release it officially at some point later on.

It was more about testing the waters of alternative release methods than rebelling against the concept of record labels.

If anything, Thom just seems to be against the major labels.
