Madonna makes chart history Lifted from madonnarama:
In its third week on Billboard's Hot 100, Madonna's "Die Another Day" (Warner Bros.) is already No. 18. With retail sales figures kicking in, it will easily be in the top-10 next week, and is even a contender for No. 1 [see "Chart Beat Chat"]. But no matter where the single lands next week, it's already rewritten the record books. "Die Another Day" is Madonna's 44th top-40 hit, the highest amount ever for a solo female artist. The material girl overtakes Aretha Franklin, who has had 43 top-40 hits on the Hot 100 to date. Amazingly, Madonna has reached the total of 44 top-40 hits with only 48 chart entries, an impressive ratio of hits. The four Madonna titles to miss the top-40 are "Bedtime Story" (No. 42 in 1995), "Human Nature" (No. 46 in 1995), "Love Don't Live Here Anymore" (No. 75 in 1996), and "Nothing Really Matters" (No. 93 in 1999). "Die Another Day" will be Madonna's 35th top-10 hit. That will push her past the Beatles' 34 top-10 hits and leave her second only to Elvis Presley, who has amassed 38 top-10 hits to date, a figure Madonna should easily be able to pass this decade. That's pretty cool. Although I'm not big on Madonna, I'd rather see her get this record over many others.
The only thing to add, is the sheer length of time she's been on the pop scene does give her an edge over many of her contemporaries. The Beatles had 9 years. She's already had, what, 17? Madonna's first single came out in 1982 so she's been in the biz for 20 years.

Wasn't her "You Can Dance" cd the first ever remix album? So I've read..then Paula Abdul came out with "Shut Up & Dance" the rest is history...

One of the first. Eurythmics had a remix album in 1984 called Touch Dance. It only had 4 songs but it still counts.

How ya like them apples? I'm not surprised one bit that "Nothing Really Matters" bombed as a single in 1999.That is the weakest track on the 'Ray Of Light' CD! Why didn't they release stronger songs like "Sky Fits Heaven","Drowned World/Substitute For Love" and "To Have And Not To Hold" as singles?!

Damn, that song was so incredibly cool. Plus a very very interesting and good video to go with it. Must have been because she was still in a bit of a dark corner with the media over the whole sex/erotica stuff or something. The first two singles from the 'Bedtime Stories' album,"Secret" and "Take A Bow",were big hits ("Take A Bow" spent about 5 weeks at Number One,I think). But for some reason, the two remaining singles stalled on the charts.I've always felt that "Forbidden Love" and "Inside Of Me" were better choices for singles. If only these record companies would listen to the fans

Yeah, but the 2nd two singles showed that she hadn't lost her edge. Releasing "Rain", "I'll Remember", "Secret", and "Take A Bow" all in a row seemed like a direct reaction to all the criticism she recieved for being too edgy with Erotica and Sex. I liked those 2 choices for singles. I think "Bedtime Story" flopped cuz it was too weird and too much of a Bjork ripoff. She didn't really make that song her own.
