Help With Kool & The Gang

I've seriously been trying to get into Kool & The Gang's stuff, but I'm pretty skeptical about their earlier material (before the JT era). Now I might lose my funk card for this, but I don't own anything by them. Of course I've heard their pop songs like Celebration, Ladies Night, Too Hot, Joanna, Jungle Boogie and Get Down On It. But I've also heard that they were much more than that during their earlier period. They were more of a soul-jazz outfit. I have considered in purchasing their 2005 double disc compilation, Gold this week:

Are there any other albums or compilations you recommend me picking up?

Skeptical? lol

That's where the true raw FUNK lies...

...the essence of their being.

Regarding their early to mid 70s period...

"They're the second-baddest out there...They make such bad records that you got to be careful when you play a new tape on the way home from the record store. Their groove is so strong you could wreck."

~James Brown

Don't mind me, I just have a preference for the early years.
If you want the Pop/Funk, go with the J.T. stuff.

Hell yeah tA. I been really sleeping on the gang for a long time but all that changed last year when I found a cheap copy of Light of Worlds. I'm slowly building up the collection.

The JT years are guilty pleasures silverchild, everyone has 'em biggrin

I've considered buying this compilation, but it doesn't have their 1981 hit "Jones Vs.Jones",which I love.I don't know why that particular song is always left off these compilations.

Their Gold compilation is about as good as you could hope for with a group that has basically had 2 separate careers. Buy it! nod

Very good point.

Why not get both comps...

I don't have much Kool and the Gang either, but I do have a couple of compilations and a few albums.

I have:

I know that seems like a lot, but I don't have much of their earlier stuff. I have heard a few of the albums and tracks (and love what I've heard), but I haven't picked them up yet.

My favorite that I have is the "Something Special" album.

I first got into Kool and the Gang during the "Ladies Night" era back in 1979. I'm one of the younger orgers. lol

I have the "Ladies Night" album, along with the "Celebrate" album. After that, I have several 45s and 12 Inches from the group. As for the earlier stuff, I only have "The Best Of Kool and the Gang 1969-1976".
Andy is a four letter word.
