EROTICA is cousin to COME. Both have a coldness to them.

I personally love how the fire/ice dichotomy exists within a single song. Like on Madonna's update of "Fever" where her fiery words are stoked within a frigid almost industrial synth landscape. And especially on "Secret Garden" where Madonna's detached delivery is in constant clash with the "fanning of the fire" effects in the instrumentation bringing about a blitheness on the surface that serves as a teasing counterpoint to the sexual urgency underneath.

EROTICA is the only album where Madonna was able to consummate the union between her words and music without relying on trends or tying herself up to genres.

EROTICA still is Madonna's boldest and strongest artistic statement.

I like your analysis thumbs up! It's my favorite Madonna album. There's a coldness and sadness to many songs ("Words","In This Life","Bad Girl").It's actually a very dark, moody album. It's also the most New York-sounding album Madonna ever made.It screams "New York underground nightclub" lol

Oh, Erotica is your favourite? Come on SoulAlive, don't disappoint me that much! razz

"Like a Prayer" isn't even the best video from that album.

FWIW, "Bad Girl" and "Oh Father" are definitely my two favorite videos by her.

I think this is my favorite album by her again. There were a couple of years after ROL that it was my favorite. And there were even more years after AL that it was my favorite album.

I think this one is back at the top though.

I have never known so much love for "bad girl" as on these boards. I like it, but the lyrics to the chorus always seemed cheesy to me (bad girl, drunk by 6, smoked to many cigarettes today, etc).

In this life and why's it so hard are so much better live - rareness for her.

I actually might prefer "erotic" from the sex book to "erotica" - and of course the COADF version with "you thrill me" is the best version of that song yet.

Best album, best singles, best tour, and best collection of videos from one Madonna album ever! I like that she has made sure to include at least one song from it last two go rounds, though a perfect madonna show for me would have both "rain" and "deeper and deeper" (plus the SNL version of "fever," but i know that's asking a lot).

wouldnt it be cool if she showed some love to this record with an erotica medley on her next tour? she should replace that timberlake booolshit with:

Erotica/You Thrill Me/Bad Girl/Rain/Fever/Deeper and Deeper

Yeah, that'll happen.
I'll leave it alone babe...just be me

LOL...it was the same thing with me,too. For several years after ROL was released,I was convinced that it was my favorite Madonna album.Several years ago,I changed my mind and decided that 'Erotica' is truly my favorite Madonna album.I go through this all the time...constantly re-arranging my favorite Madonna albums.I'm pretty sure that,no matter what she releases in the future,'Erotica' will remain my favorite.I think it's her strongest set of songs, her most consistent album.

"Bad Girl" is such a sad song. There's alot of desperation and hopelessness in the lyrics and in the arrangement. It was an unlikely song for Madonna to do at that point.During that era,she was going around with no clothes on,acting crazy, talking about sex, breaking barriers and stereotypes, creating a different controversy each week....and then along comes a song where she's admitting that "I'm not happy when I act this way".I don't know if the lyrics are based on a real situation, but it almost seems like Madonna is baring her soul on that track. She describes a very dysfunctional relationship, but she could also be talking about the wild life she was supposedly living at the time.

In this life and why's it so hard are so much better live - rareness for her.

I agree. Both of those songs worked extremely well on the 'Girlie Show'.

I like what she did to "Deeper And Deeper" on the 'Re-invention Tour'.It was cool hearing the song in a relaxed, jazzy arrangement.I hope she includes it on the next tour, only this time,I want the dance version.

one track on this album that I really disliked for years was "Words" and then something happened about 5 years ago, and I was listening to this album hardcore to make an expanded version, and I realized that I absolutely LOVE this song now.

The exact same thing happened to me! I wasn't blown away by this song at first.I thought it was filler. Then one day,I really listened to the lyrics and got swept up in it.It's a dark, desperate track. On the surface, this album seems like a relentless dance album,tailor-made for the clubs. But if you really listen to the lyrics and the moodiness of the arrangements, you'll find alot of sadness there."Words" is now one of my favorite tracks.

Erotica for me is her peak. I loved what came before and after, but for me its the record she was born to make. It was conceptual and insular. The image, the videos, the lyrics, the sonic textures of the album were all perfect (though im not saying its a perfect record). Like a prayer was a confessional record for sure - but it was also a very mainstream, obvious pop record. This album is confessional in a different way, but also covered in hooks, great songs & lyrics, but it's not obvious. Its pretty leftfield for a pop album.

Songs like Deeper & Deeper, Erotica, Rain, Whys It So Hard, Waiting, Bad Girl, are Madonna classics in my eyes. Rain & Whys It so har in particular id love to see hear perform again.

talk to the hand Her best album? Really? It's pretty uneven. I'd say it's her second best of the '80s (behind the debut, of course).

It's Madonna's bravest & best album hands-down, IMO. worship She's an amazing music artiste. No wonder she got so f*cking p!ssed with songs like Human Nature ("I'm not your bitch, don't hang your shit on me" giggle) AFTER when the media & press was all no no no!. F*CK THE MADONNA HATERS!! finger I do think her new single "4 Minutes" is pretty crappy, tho. barf SHIT-HOP alert! cop lolI also think this is her most personal work. I also again think that if there ever was a female prince she is it. Maybe not so much as an equal but as a running rival ..... the hilary to to his obama!! Which do you chose to vote???
P.S: Who has heard the "Rain" Tapes?? cool
