Alicia Keys Cancels TV Appearance Due To Throat Problems

This actually happened 10 days ago, but since no-one's mentioned it I thought I would. She was scheduled to perform on Later...With Jools Holland on 20th February, but she lost her voice and had to cancel. Many of us have been predicting this for some time. Her voice has been clearly strained and I always wondered whether she recognised the problem and was doing anything about it. If she's been in denial then this could be just the wake up call she needs. If she rests her voice for a week or so, then she should be back singing soon, but if she doesn't start taking greater care in future, her vocal chords could go the way of MJ's.

Not really a shock since her schedule has been outrageuous and her tour started already, about a week ago, so im sure they looked at what would they could cancel, and in those events, tv appearances are the first things to get cancelled since you never want to "blow out" a concert date, as John Mellencamp once said when he cancelled a few dates in the 90's due to his "heart attack"

The fact that it was cancelled specifically due to throat problems means that her voice must be getting worse. We've all heard it in her live performances for a while now. When she first came out she was vocally flawless. That hasn't been the case for some time. It'll be interesting to hear her live singing over the next few months. If she's going ahead with her tour then it's possible they're putting short-term profit before long-term well being.

Alicia actually thought her voice was a "blessing" the way it was, I should've known something was up.

Well it all comes down to adapting to your voice and material. I think the fact that she is going into a forum and sound that is more raw and live is challenging her voice, I think if someone like Mariah was making "raw" sounding records she would have to retire tomorrow, mainly because her vocals have not been trained in that respect. Someone that fits this bill of adapting would be Elton John, back in 1987 he found out he had to have surgery on his throat, thankfully it wasnt cancerous but the surgery ended his "high note" trademark from the 70's, but rather than quit, Elton re-learned his songs and started to re-do them in lower registers, and he recently said that he is a better singer now than he was back in the day, because when you start you just go for it and you dont think of long term, you think about that show and that night. So Alicia could be at that, Mariah was at that point and never adjusted which is why her live singing sounds bad at times, and she covers it up with overdubs and back tracks.

No fucking surprise. Her voice sounded like shit on "No One" - completely mis-using her voice and ruining it in the process.

Here's her singing "Fallin" last night. She sounds so tired, like her voice is barely making it, but I still love this performance. I guess because it sounds a little more free.
