i hate kelly clarkson's singing. there. i said it.

i think she has the potential of having a really good singing voice, though whenever i've seen her sing on TV, it's like someone told her that shouting everything means good singing, and she has absolutely no range other than SHOUTING EVERYTHING SHE SINGS!!!!

okay, we get it. you can belt. contrast it with something. show us you know how to interpret a song and not just holler because people think it's impressive.

lol Is Joe Strummer considered a good singer by most people? hmm I have no idea, although I can't see how that's even possible. (I'm not really a Clash fan obviously. I've tried though.) It's not about their influence as a band, but how he sings.

An example: take "Rock the Casbah". He sounds horrible. disbelief

On the radiator gri-i-i-i-lle...

and

They began to waaaa-a-a-il...

He is so off-key it makes me cringe every time I hear it. I actually have to change the station if that one comes on the radio. You can't tell me he's singing in tune with the music. disbelief

there's a whole raft of british singers in the punk tradition - Joe Strummer, Ian Brown, Shaun Ryder, Mark E Smith, John Lydon, etc etc, that have a particularly aquired taste abroad. Jarvis falls into that bracket too MinnieG so its cool that you like him nod

As for Ian Brown, his voice does jar like hell live sometimes, but the Stone Roses had something extra when you put it all together. They had magic cool

Yeah, I'm not saying that punk bands are known for having brilliant vocalists. They actually had "anti-singers" for lack of a better term. lol But there's just something about Strummer's voice that just really grates on my nerves for some reason. It's just so off-key and I can't take it.

It doesn't help though that their music sort of bores me as well. And I was pretty involved in the punk scene during my teenage years, so me not liking The Clash is probably sort of a blasphemy in those circles today.
So the combination of that, and the voice equals no fun listening for MinnieG. lurking

*prepares to be stoned by rabid Clash fans*

and with that, this thread title should be changed to "People who THINK they can sing, but actually suck monkey balls!" *

Because people, myself included, are mentioning artists that were never known for their vocal prowess or probably could't give a rat's anyway about how they sound when they sing. smile

*except for the Janis debate that's going on. It's odd, people either think she's one of the greatest ever or the worst ever. lol confuse

come on, cut her some slack - she's just breathing for the first time since that dastardly rogue's been gone. Once she works all that anger out she'll sing normally nod

spit omg Have I actually used monkey balls in the past?! I seriously can't recall. lol boxed

I better use it sparingly from now on though, because I'll wear it out. Yeah, I know, I know, "monkey balls" or better yet "donkey balls" is soooo 5 years ago. rolleyes

I'm stuck in a time warp. And not a good one where I can go back and party with my favorite rock stars of yore either. sad

daltry's voice might have been connected with some occasional schmaltzy music over the years, but he does have great pipes. i can't understand how anyone would think differently.

nod Daltry is the man. This thread is just anti-Rock.

well, if you're judging singers on their pure talent, a lot of rock singers wouldn't be considered good singers. But on style points, and delivery, many of them can be judged good to great.

He sounds great blasting out a huge rock anthem, but I wouldn't say he's got the versatility of a truly great singer. There are times on Live at Leeds where he sounds a bit shaky.

If THIS is "incredible", I would hate to hear Janis having an off night! lol She yells & hollers too much in most of her performances.

[Edited 3/5/08 3:51am]

she was a blues-based hard rock singer in the late sixties. you want she should have sung like olivia newton john?

Tina Turner & Teena Marie can yell and holler as well. But as least they don't do it like a truck driver!!! disbelief lol I'm deeply sorry Janis-fans. But I'm being too honest with my opinions.

But in two words, I can tell you someone who was far worse than him: Janis Joplin.

She may had been a R&R Hall Of Famer, but that woman couldn't sing worth a f***!!! disbelief lol

No, YOU get RE-educated on women that can sing & scream (Chaka Khan, Tina Turner, Teena Marie), and not yell & holler like a truck driver (Janis Joplin).

Suzi, Joan, & Lita? No.

Grace? Not sure. She had her share of great moments that outnumbered her negative moments.

Wendy O. Williams? Yes, she was crap. But in Heavy Metal, it's not a big deal. cool

God, there's some dumb people on this website. 95% of the people listed here have no place on this list. And if you're interested my first nominees would be Posh Spice, Ginger Spice, and Scary Spice, and perhaps an honorary mention for Axl Rose. I'm not gonna devote any more thought to the matter though, since no-one else has bothered to.
