i think she has the potential of having a really good singing voice, though whenever i've seen her sing on TV, it's like someone told her that shouting everything means good singing, and she has absolutely no range other than SHOUTING EVERYTHING SHE SINGS!!!! okay, we get it. you can belt. contrast it with something. show us you know how to interpret a song and not just holler because people think it's impressive. (I'm not really a Clash fan obviously. I've tried though.) It's not about their influence as a band, but how he sings. An example: take "Rock the Casbah". He sounds horrible. On the radiator gri-i-i-i-lle... and They began to waaaa-a-a-il... He is so off-key it makes me cringe every time I hear it. I actually have to change the station if that one comes on the radio. You can't tell me he's singing in tune with the music. there's a whole raft of british singers in the punk tradition - Joe Strummer, Ian Brown, Shaun Ryder, Mark E Smith, John Lydon, etc etc, that have a particularly aquired taste abroad. Jarvis falls into that bracket too MinnieG so its cool that you like him As for Ian Brown, his voice does jar like hell live sometimes, but the Stone Roses had something extra when you put it all together. They had magic Yeah, I'm not saying that punk bands are known for having brilliant vocalists. They actually had "anti-singers" for lack of a better term. But there's just something about Strummer's voice that just really grates on my nerves for some reason. It's just so off-key and I can't take it. It doesn't help though that their music sort of bores me as well. And I was pretty involved in the punk scene during my teenage years, so me not liking The Clash is probably sort of a blasphemy in those circles today. So the combination of that, and the voice equals no fun listening for MinnieG. *prepares to be stoned by rabid Clash fans* and with that, this thread title should be changed to "People who THINK they can sing, but actually suck monkey balls!" * Because people, myself included, are mentioning artists that were never known for their vocal prowess or probably could't give a rat's anyway about how they sound when they sing. *except for the Janis debate that's going on. It's odd, people either think she's one of the greatest ever or the worst ever. I better use it sparingly from now on though, because I'll wear it out. Yeah, I know, I know, "monkey balls" or better yet "donkey balls" is soooo 5 years ago. I'm stuck in a time warp. But on style points, and delivery, many of them can be judged good to great. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

There are times on Live at Leeds where he sounds a bit shaky. My Legacy

[Edited 3/5/08 3:51am] she was a blues-based hard rock singer in the late sixties. you want she should have sung like olivia newton john? Tina Turner & Teena Marie can yell and holler as well. But as least they don't do it like a truck driver!!! I'm deeply sorry Janis-fans. But I'm being too honest with my opinions. | |

God, there's some dumb people on this website. 95% of the people listed here have no place on this list. And if you're interested my first nominees would be Posh Spice, Ginger Spice, and Scary Spice, and perhaps an honorary mention for Axl Rose. I'm not gonna devote any more thought to the matter though, since no-one else has bothered to. “The man who never looks into a newspaper is better informed than he who reads them, inasmuch as he who knows nothing is nearer to truth than he whose mind is filled with falsehoods and errors.”
