Christ, we are get stickies for more and more less mainstream stuff that only sells in America now.

It looks like we've only got about 10 people posting on here, with 90 posts in total.

Even Madonna's "Ray of light is ten years old" is outgunning it! Why is that not a sticky then?

Just curious.....

make that 11 people posting

well, it figures with all the Mariah Carey and Janet Jackson threads, etc.

the org is not what it used to be when it comes to people with a wide variety of musical tastes

glad to see a NIN thread here

i wrote them off a long time ago, but picked up With Teeth, and this new remix of Year Zero and loving it!!

my download won't work either

I don't remember seeing this thread until today and I'm a fan. boxed

If I get the 2CD set I get discs and downloads? I want it immediately so I was going to do the $5 download but I want something physical as well.

I kinda agree that it seems there is less variety when it comes to threads around here. And you forgot MJ.
I'm all about freedom of speech and post whatever you like but a little diversity would be cool. I know some people try to throw some variety in the mix but it's usually quickly lost amongst all the hype of the day. Oh well, seek and ye shall find good music under the radar.
On topic, I'm really digging Ghost and NINs recent output. Within 2 years we got Year Zero, Remix Album, and now 2-CD set Ghosts. As a fan what more could you want? And all quality material I might add. Great time to be a NIN fan.
Fantasy is reality in the world today. But I'll keep hangin in there, that is the only way.

It's just like me to post something, and then forget to look for responses - thanks! 39 feels "interesting" - I don't feel old at all, but I do feel like it's time for some new things to come into my horizon.

I've listened to it almost twice (LOL), and I have three observations (so far):

1) This definitely will be something that critics have to listen to several times before they get the direction of the album. After the picture that Year Zero painted, this was probably the best next step.

2) Ghosts both continues the departure from 90s NIN, but gets back on track and would have been a great release after The Fragile, too.

3) Multi-tracking, as apparently you can get if you buy the special edition, is both a Godsend and a curse.

Am I the only one who finds this album totally underwhelming? I've given it multiple chances, but I still think it's mediocre.

The biggest problem is that there is too much ambiance. The album as a whole feels unfocused and devoid of solid melodies.

Past NIN instrumentals like A Warm Place and Another Version of the Truth all had central melodies, and the atmospheric sound effects complimented them.

Ghosts is almost all atmosphere but with no central substance to hold it all together. In effect, a lot of it is pleasant noise.

This is one of my biggest musical disappointments in recent memory. I still admire Trent for attempting a project like this, though.

No, someone told me that they didn't like it either - but they hadn't listened to the whole thing yet. This person thought it was detrimental to the NIN catalog - but I say fuck the catalog and the label it rode in on lol

To be honest, I've only given it one-time listen - but intend to give it a second go. I do like some tracks much better than others, though - but the ones I like, I like a lot.

I agree, Trent gets major props for this ambitious piece. clapping

Some of it is relaxing..But thats not what im looking for from Trent /NIN confused

I know this is one of them experimental /side project albums
If it took him 10 weeks to put this together .
i hope its another 30 weeks till we have a full vocal album lol

Im not saying its that bad..
but i doubt it gets much rotation from me.. yawn

I don't find it underwhelming - I really enjoy it but I don't know how much I'll listen to it. To me, it sounds like a movie score to a movie that doesn't exist. The photos seem to "create" that movie in my mind.

The "pleasant noise" comparison is valid, but at this point, that is what I wanted from NIN. It fits nicely among all the superheavy techno and distortion of previous (early) works.

A coworker of mine listened to it, and was bored by it halfway through.

Purple, I'm sorry this was a disappointment for you . . . I know how you feel (Planet Earth).

I haven’t had a chance to really absorb it in its entirety but I like it so far. I like cinematic instrumentals. They help me conjure up interesting moods and scenes for writing and this is definitely doing the trick. Sometimes I just want a ‘soundtrack’. No lyrics or strong melodies to distract me from what my own imagination can create.

I agree. I love instrumentals. Sometimes I don't wanna hear anybodys thoughts/opinions/feelings/frustrations on anything. Just music will do.
I've said this many times but that's one of the appeals of The Fragile. Nice contrast of songs and instrumentals. It's all relative and I'm glad Trent tackled a project like this. Kinda the same way I feel about Prince's N.E.W.S. project. Nice diversion.

nod The Fragile is one of my favorites not just by NIN but for the very reason you describe.

it's a big pill to swallow, but i think this album sounds much better as a whole than it would if you tried to listen to it in pieces, or as a collection of songs/tracks/pieces/whatEVER. i think even the genericness of the track titles suggests that they're all components of a bigger whole. that said, i like the album in its entirety, and i couldn't even begin to say which tracks i like best - and i'm not even trying to figure it out. lol
