I did my part and paid for the $5.00 D/L. And for the record, I didn't have any problems at all. Hmmm. I might add that I will also purchase hard copy when it's released through the regular retail outlets. I don't like paying shipping and handling.
Anyway, from what I've heard, I really like. I haven't given it it's proper listening yet but I'm not worried. Trent always come through. And I've always been a fan of his/their instrumentals.
Plus, it's just cool to have new material from someone I dig. Completely out of the blue. Surprise! Very cool.
Fantasy is reality in the world today. But I'll keep hangin in there, that is the only way.

$750,000 earned right there, which isn't exactly madonna money, but it'll keep the lights on at castle reznorstein for another month. smile

oh, and i finally got to listen to the whole thing this afternoon. great stuff. thumbs up!

Seriously, you can't shell out $5 for a legit download? WTF?

He's trying to do something positive here . . .

lol

i keep listening to it as one big work rather than trying to work out any groupings of the individual albums. he must've meant something by it, though hmmm

didn't trent give his blessings to people obtaining the album via torrent?

though i kinda agree, even if he's being a big "free the music" hippie about all this, it doesn't hurt to shell out five or ten bucks to show yer appreciation. not to mention, it's at least THAT good of an album.

i think he put the first cd, maybe the second one too, onto torrent sites himself. nod and i agree- i'm a dead broke student and i still got the $5 download.

I downloaded it today for $5. Here's what I got:

36 tracks in Apple Lossless format
40-page PDF booklet (which is very cool, and helps convey a "tone" to the music)
11 wallpapers

Side note: I have been waiting for Apple Lossless (or any Lossless) downloads to be made available, and this is the first I've seen. I won't buy whole albums online in lossy (MP3, etc) format. With Lossless format, there is no need for a physical plastic CD.

So what Trent Reznor is doing, in my opinion, equates to a multi-tiered assault on the record companies ... and that is cool.

Cool. I just ordered now for $5. I agree with what Trent is doing; I think it tweaks the Radiohead model perfectly by offering just a teaser for free.

I can't wait to hear this; I've loved all of Trent's instrumentals, particularly A Warm Place, and I've literally always wanted him to do a project like this.

A few more points:

Each one of the 36 tracks is tagged with different artwork. I have never seen that done ... it's at once disturbing and totally necessary. So Trent took a seemingly miniscule part of the download experience - the digital artwork - and enhanced it. Instead of just one cover art, there are 37 (main + 36 separate). Once more, I think this paves the way for a seamless transition into digital and away from physical CDs.

Prince: please take notice. While I don't see Prince's new albums being released this way, I can only hope that someday the Vault will be available either in installments or track-by-track as Lossless downloads. Perhaps the lead "single" from a certain installment will be released to the torrents, and the remainder will be a $5 download with artwork and liner notes. Or, perhaps a nonstop release schedule of live shows (a la Pearl Jam) in the same manner?

What disappoints me about Prince is that for a long time in the 90s/early 00's he was really getting the online thing. The music club, releasing The Work on Napster, etc. He was one of the pioneers of online music (alongside David Bowie) and was really doing well in that regard. Now he seems to have turned his back on all that . . .

this geeked me out BEYOND BELIEF. drool

and yeah, the image-per-track idea was perfect for listening to this album for the first time. the visuals gave me something to attach to the lyric-less music i was listening to. it was almost as good as gazing at a vinyl gatefold sleeve while listening to a new album...not QUITE as good, but close. i was very impressed and happily surprised at this touch. god is in the details.

I know it's called Ghosts I-IV, but isn't it going to be released as 2 Cd's? wink
Just poking fun.
For real, this is just cool all around. Hell I haven't even worn out Year Zero and The Remix album yet!

Um, I DID pay for it. Read my previous post. I paid for the $10 version, $23 inc shipping and handling.

The physical CDs are really what I paid for, but obviously I want to hear it now. I had trouble downloading from ghosts.nin.com because of the traffic I guess. Tried to download from the link I got after buying on MULTIPLE occasions and it kept stopping after a few megabytes. Then I was told my link had exceeded the download traffic limit.

I'm not the only one either, there's a 40 page thread about people having the same problem over on echoingthesound.

I'm a massive NIN fan and if I had a bit more money right now I would have shelled out for the $300 version. But I'll be happy with the physical CDs when they arrive. Nice addition to my halo's. Now if I could only track down some of the singles off of Pretty Hate Machine.....
