"Nine Inch Nails: Ghosts I (2008)

Hello from Nine Inch Nails.

We're very proud to present a new collection of instrumental music, Ghosts I-IV. Almost two hours of music recorded over an intense ten week period last fall, Ghosts I-IV sprawls Nine Inch Nails across a variety of new terrain.

Now that we're no longer constrained by a record label, we've decided to personally upload Ghosts I, the first of the four volumes, to various torrent sites, because we believe BitTorrent is a revolutionary digital distribution method, and we believe in finding ways to utilize new technologies instead of fighting them.

We encourage you to share the music of Ghosts I with your friends, post it on your website, play it on your podcast, use it for video projects, etc. It's licensed for all non-commercial use under Creative Commons.

We've also made a 40 page PDF book to accompany the album. If you'd like to download it for free, visit http://ghosts.nin.com/main/pdf

Ghosts I is the first part of the 36 track collection Ghosts I-IV. Undoubtedly you'll be able to find the complete collection on the same torrent network you found this file, but if you're interested in the release, we encourage you to check it out at ghosts.nin.com, where the complete Ghosts I-IV is available directly from us in a variety of DRM-free digital formats, including FLAC lossless, for only $5. You can also order it on CD, or as a deluxe package with multitrack audio files, high definition audio on Blu-ray disc, and a large hard-bound book.

We genuinely appreciate your support, and hope you enjoy the new music. Thanks for listening.

good for NIN for following the radiohead model and tweaking it to their advantage a little. i hope we're seeing the beginning of a successful trend. nod

yeah, I think giving away the album partially is a better fit.. cause if you dig what you hear, it will give people an incentive to invest in something they know they will love.

I support him 100%

I hate to sound like a rabid fanboy, but he was planning this release model about 2 years before In Rainbows was released. He's just been waiting for his contract to end.

It's fucking phenomenal. Prince, Madonna et all should take notes.

It's also a great release, even for an instrumental. Compare it to the drivel that was N.E.W.S!

well, get ready for everyone and their tapeworm to refer to it as "the radiohead model", since they're the ones who pulled it off first and got all the hype over it. though i'm sure trent's crying himself to the bank about it as we speak.

Excellent!
First off, I love NIN when they do instrumentals. Part of the appeal of The Fragile for me.
Can I purchase just a 2-CD regular version? Or is it only available, hard copy wise, in more expensive deluxe versions?
Fantasy is reality in the world today. But I'll keep hangin in there, that is the only way.

I found my answer on the website. wink
I guess my question now is will it be available at retail outlets.
BTW, diggin' this stuff! And it was completely out of the blue. Nice. cool

lol

Trent's gonna make loads from this, the bastard. The $300 deluxe one nets him $750k in revenues alone.

Nine Inch Nails album Released To Web
Link

March 2, 2008

At about 6 p.m. PST on Sunday night, Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor released a 36-song instrumental collection, "Ghosts I-IV," direct to the Internet via his official Web site. The album is available at a number of pricing options, beginning with a free sampling of 9 of the songs.

All 36 cuts can be had for as low as $5 (download), or for as high as $300, a signed limited-edition set that will ship in May (pictured). There's also a $10 double-disc CD set, which will ship on April 8 and includes a 16-page booklet, or a $75 package that includes two discs, a DVD and a deluxe book.

Four hours after launch, site traffic appeared to prevent me purchasing any of the options, as the site would fail to load when attempting to check out. However, "Ghosts I-IV" is also available via Amazon.com for $5, which downloaded without any hiccups.

This is how Reznor describes the album, the result of a 10-week musical experiment, on his site: "I've been considering and wanting to make this kind of record for years, but by its very nature it wouldn't have made sense until this point. This collection of music is the result of working from a very visual perspective -- dressing imagined locations and scenarios with sound and texture; a soundtrack for daydreams. I'm very pleased with the result and the ability to present it directly to you without interference. I hope you enjoy the first four volumes of Ghosts."

It's long been expected that Reznor would be the next high-profile artist to follow Radiohead's pay-what-you-will, variable pricing model, which the band utilized in October of last year for "In Rainbows."

Reznor, in fact, has already experimented with the model. Last year, Reznor collaborated with Saul Williams, and released the album, "The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of Niggy Tardust," online in November, allowing fans to freely download it or pay $5 for a higher quality version. Initial stats released by Reznor revealed that about 80% fans opted not to pay for the album. Radiohead and its management have refused to release any numbers.

Billboard.com is already reporting that "Ghosts I-IV" will receive a traditional retail release on April 8 via Red Distribution.

Owned by Sony BMG, Red distributes a number of independent labels, including ATO Records, which released Radiohead's "In Rainbows" on Jan. 1.

I haven't bought a NIN disc in a while. I'll catch up with the old stuff and see what happens.

Sounds like they are spreading this all over. I might wait to see what comes out in April. Maybe all these different versions make sense in order to appease different kinds of fans. Of course, since the public is the same one that chose not to buy "In Rainbows" as well as Reznor's side project with some guy (Saul Williams? or did I just make that name up?), Reznor better not count on making any money on anyone except for some hardcores that buy the boxed set.

i dunno...with this model, people have to pay at least five bucks if they want the whole album in ANY format, and judging by the mucked up servers at nin.com since last night, i'm guessing at least two or three people have paid for a copy by now...that'll give trent at least enough for a pack of black socks at H&M. nod
