Lewis Taylor Appreciation I can't believe this guy wasn't a huge star, also that he retired from the music business a couple of years ago.

I actually struggled to find many decent clips on youtube which is another shame, people need to hear his music!!!! ok I've calmed down now

Lewis is without a doubt one of my favorite artists of all time. The man's creative output is its own universe in and of itself. I was really disappointed that he decided to retire, but hopefully someone will come to him and say "See My Way" and he'll come back. One can always dream, right?

More LT.
He has been known to make the occasional odd turn... ...For instance, recreating tunes from Captain Beefheart's Troutmask Replica. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."

I thought Esthero looked like a transexual in the "Stoned" video.
Lewis hasn't really retired from the industry, as he's playing in The Edgar Broughton Band and The Drivers (who have an album out soon with him on it). He's going by his original name of Andrew Taylor (although Taylor isn't even his real surname).

He seemed like UK's version of Shuggie Otis -- a brilliant cat who by all rights should have hit it big but was at odds with industry philosophy. What a great talent. One of the best artists to come along in years. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

He's not at odds with industry philosophy. He has an immense fear of success. He couldn't deal with the promo push that "Stoned Pt.1" was getting (as in TV slots) and sabotaged it. He also fucked the MD gig he had with Gnarls Barkley. Shame, as he's a bloody genius.

Lewis is the man..The way I felt about P in the 80's and Meshell in the 90's is how I feel about Lewis today. A brilliant cat.
My brother black guitaristz (what's up B?) and paligap hipped me to him on the org a few years back.

I've heard some of his stuff before. He definitely has some Minnie funk appeal going. And, I recall him doing a cut/ Estero a while back.

This may well be the last vocal thing he did...
http://www.dgmlive.com/ar...?show=1061 I'm sure that some of you LT fans have his Sheriff Jack stuff from the late 80s. What amazes me about it is how shit his voice was! He truly came on and leaps and bounds since then... [Edited 2/29/08 19:59pm]

I had the pleasure to know 'Lewis' during the time of his 'Stoned' records and everything written here about him - not least Mong - seems pretty on the money to me.
I've met lots of musicians ad music people over the decades but, acknowledged or otherwise, Lewis Taylor is a true genius...for my money the most important artist to emerge in the UK since John Lennon. Generally, the name is unrecognised by the man (woman) on the street, but most musicians one meets regard Lewis in awe as some kind of musical God. And, rightly so...his talent and artistry is truly exceptional. Like many gifted people (the piece about Princes reaction to this site is but one, not untypical, example), it's not always possible to follow their personal logic and many of their actions appear, well, strange and self-defeating. I suspect Andrew really struggled with the 'Lewis' persona and killed him off a couple of years back. 'Andrew' continues to play bit parts (ie rhythm guitar and b.v's) with some truly average bands and he seems much happier, at face value, being out of the (relative) limelight. Lewis Taylor defines the phrase 'Cult Artist' and even if that persona is dead forever (and that angelic soulful voice was part of the Lewis persona), we're lucky that such a solid body of workhas been left behind for us to enjoy. Lewis remains a true giant in an industry of pygmies.

Hey Man!
Well Lewis was (somewhat unfairly to both artists) sometimes called the UK Prince (for want of a better description)!!!
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
...
Yeah, definitely an unfair description, though... So, y'think he'll always be making some kind of music, as long as he stays well away from the limelight? It's a shame though.....as you said, he's got the talent to blow most of the industry away...everyone I played his music for has been floored(especially those B sides and rare tracks)...and my musician friends say he's very inspiring, makes them want to push themselves further creatively... I made a pilgrimage up to NYC, back in January of '06, to catch his performance at the packed Bowery Ballroom...the place was filled with fans and fellow musicians-- I remember seeing Moby and Eric Roberson, and others among the crowd...Jazzheads, Rockers, Funkateers, The Hip-Hop crowd...everybody was representin' ... He Killed, and the ecstatic crowd was singing along and he really seemed to having fun!!! I really thought he was finally getting his due after all these years. After the concert, a friend of mine said, "This is one of those concerts where people who aren't here tonight will years later claim they were," .. In retrospect, I guess all the attention scared the hell out of him...you could kinda tell from the subsequent interviews that he really would rather be somewhere else... ....but if he's truly happier this way, so be it, I guess... ... There are 3 albums that never leaves my IPOD Martin Luther's Rebel Soul music, Bilal's Love for Sale and Lewis Taylor's Stoned Part 1.
I just can't find words to describe the greatness of this man. In fact I wish I was him or at least have half of his talent. He could have been R and B version of radiohead. I never understood why that didn't happen but this thread has really shed some light on the mystery.
