CHICAGO - Valerie Bertinelli says despite her girl-next-door image, her marriage to Eddie Van Halen was hurt by infidelity and drug use — by her, too.

"I wasn't an angel, either. I cheated, too," Bertinelli said on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" broadcast Monday. "He claims to this day that I cheated first, but I don't know. I don't know about the timing."

Bertinelli, who starred in the long-running sitcom "One Day at a Time," married Van Halen in 1981 when she was 20. She said she was "destroying my body," trying to keep up with a rock-star lifestyle on the weekends and weeks off from taping her TV show.

"It got to a point where whenever I heard the birds chirp, I'd be like, 'Oh, God, no.' It took me years after stopping the cocaine before I was able to enjoy a sunrise and enjoy the sound of birds," she said.

The couple separated in 2001. Their divorce became final in December. They have a son, Wolfgang, who's now 16 and touring as bassist with the band Van Halen.

The actress, 47, said she has struggled with body-image issues since she was a child, but especially turned to food for comfort as her marriage dissolved.

Bertinelli is now a spokeswoman for Jenny Craig and said she's lost 40 pounds. She has a new book, "Losing It: And Gaining My Life Back One Pound at a Time."

Van Halen's publicist said the musician had no comment on Bertinelli's book or interviews to promote it.

Because of my job I am a person who is on the fringes on the secret homo/bi-sexual lives many public figures, even when they do so as little as a booze/coke induced dallience on at a team party during the holiday season. In all sincerity no one I know believes they are a romantic item. In my line of work and everyday living, I deal with the people who are with celebs in a very intimate manner...if we know the brand of tampon and the size of draws these folk take, we swap egg recipes in their kitchens with them after a long night at the wrong party, that usually involves being privy to very very intimate details of their private lives...I'm in constant work contact with a lot of creative folk who work day in and day out with a lot of closeted celebs. But so far, Oprah and Co. don't seem to be part of that fold

To be fair, it's just that I've lived long enough to have very strong opinions about what I see, feel, and believe (as do you, apparently). But to qualify the level of energy you seem to have for this topic, there's no way I can know, with certainty, anything about the personal life of Oprah Winfrey. Just sharing opinions here - And as you already know, opinions are like assholes: everybody's got one.

As someone said, it dishonors or devalues the friendship they do have as if two people of the same sex can’t have a close genuine friendship without it being something sexual. As for Valerie, I used to love her on One Day At A Time but over the years lost interest. This interview sounds like TMI.

Wow. I know exactly what she's talking about actually. In fact, I've said this very thing before about myself. I do enjoy the birds now though. Although I'm rarely up that early ever, but that's just because I'm lazy.
