The Wattstax DVD has a place in this Black History Month

From the introduction of Harvey Henderson's speech into The Bar-Kays performance of "Son Of Shaft" to The Staple Singers "Respect Yourself",
everyone needs to see this DVD.

Never seen the actual performances (apart from Son Of Shaft and a bit from Isaac Hayes), but I do have the 'Wattstax' CD.
It is not known why FuNkeNsteiN capitalizes his name as he does, though some speculate sunlight deficiency caused by the most pimpified white guy afro in Nordic history.

Here some more info on 'Wattstax', from Wikipedia

"Wattstax is a 1973 documentary film by Mel Stuart that focused on the 1972 Wattstax music festival and the African American community of Watts in Los Angeles. The film was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Documentary Film in 1974.

The concert was held at the Los Angeles Coliseum on August 20, 1972 and organized by Memphis's Stax Records to commemorate the seventh anniversary of the Watts riots. Wattstax was seen by some as "the Afro-American answer to Woodstock". In order to enable as many members of the black community in L.A. as possible, tickets were sold for only $1.00 each. The Reverend Jesse Jackson gave the invocation, which included his "I Am - Somebody" poem, which was recited in a call and response with the assembled stadium crowd. Interspersed between songs are interviews with Richard Pryor, Ted Lange and others who discuss the black experience in America."

Ironically larry dodson of the barkays was an original member of the group
before the temprees signed their deal, then the barkays were looking for a
lead voice and larry chose to go with the barkays and the rest is history.

Great sneaky way to start another Barkays thread. Don't let 'em scare you though. There have never been a lot of Barkays threads. Before you came along, me and funkpill were the only ones that started one and that was only occassionally.

Oh yeah.....as for "Wattstax".....yeah, that was a great movie.....especially The Barkays performance. lol
