TLC: An Appreciation

I was drivin' into the office this morn, when I came upon "Creep" by TLC on the SIRIUS. Great record (ever heard The Afghan Whigs' cover? Crap, but worth a listen for the novelty aspect). Which reminded me...

I liked quite a few TLC singles. Well, besides this one, namely:

This is How It Works
Girls Talk
Red Light Special

Okay, so that's not "quite a few". And This is How It Works wasn't a single. Then again, you're not not an an anal, nitpicking suckwad. razz

Anyhoo, these girls (well, the ones that weren't Chilli, anyway) just oozed confidence and that is always sexy (unless you're T-Boz and I'm me, in which case your knowing-cool is something I would love to have, but your just-a-tad-too-butch persona is not - in the biblical sense, anyway).

I guess what I'm saying is, Post pics of Left-eye's ass! woot!

I was a big fan a couple years ago, but then I got into rock music, and I fell out of the loop with stuff like TLC and all the pop/r&b I used to dig on a regular basis. I mean, I still love that music, and all the rest of the non-rock music that I can proudly call myself a fan of (funk, soul, oldies pop, etc.), but it's not the center of my universe anymore.

I think FanMail was my favorite. cool

I used to be obsessed with them when I was a kid and I still love 'em now. "Crazy Sexy Cool" is one of my fave albums ever. I've been playing this song of theirs a lot lately though:

"And When The Groove Is Dead And Gone, You Know That Love Survives, So We Can Rock Forever" RIP MJ heart

"Baby, that was much too fast"...Goodnight dear sweet Prince. I'll love you always heart

I'm a fan of most of their singles, but I wasn't overly impressed with the album tracks. My favorites:

Baby-Baby-Baby
What About Your Friends
Diggin' on You (L.A.'s Live Mix)
Red Light Special
Creep
Get It Up
Ain't 2 Proud 2 Beg
Hat 2 Da Back
No Scrubs

For whatever reason, I've never been too enamored with "Waterfalls." I thought it was overrated when it was released and I haven't changed my mind.

At the time (and they still may be) they were the biggest selling female group of all time as well as the longest running female group with original members.

I so much want to fuck T-Boz. cool

Their cover of P's IIWYG was the shit! In fact, P called them the girl band he WISH he had. The female version of BDP bascially, but way more attitude and personality than them dudes.

Before I was a Badu Junkie I's a TLC Junkie, mostly a Left Eye Junkie.

Check out these tunes that Left Eye guests on if you dont know em:

U Know Whats Up w/ Donnell Jones (her best rap ever)
Not Tonight w/ Lil Kim
Space Cowboy w/ NSync
Never Be The Same Again w/ Mel C
I Do w/ BLAQUE
Gimme Some w/ Toni Braxton

Also make sure you check out her the cut "Let me Live" from her solo LP "Supernova"

L - let me live, let me Live
I - i am inside, inside intelligent
S - Say say say what you gotta say
A - Always ask and you will be amazed

When she rocked the house at the VMAs with her No Scrubs rap over the beat from Vivrant Thing, she owned that room! Madonna, Lauryn, Jlo, Janet, Britney, etc were all in the house but Left Eye was the baddest motherfucker up in there! I dont have the video of it anymore...but check it out

I loved them while Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes was with them. Yep, Lisa and T-Boz had this confidence and cool that was unrivaled by any artist of that era.

Don't forget their cover of The Time's "Get It Up". Dallas Austin and TLC did a great job on that.

Red Light Special came on my iPod at work the other day and I just had to stop for a moment and let it play. I was a big fan of theirs and I miss them so much, especially Left Eye. There hasn't been a group like that for me before or since TLC and it's a shame. They kicked so much ass and I wish all that happened never did. Even with that, TLC still rocks!

They forever be my all-time favorite girl group. They came out with this attitude of why should I have to be a dolled up to get attention. With those baggy pants and over-sized shirts, the epitomized that women shouldn't have to be half-dressed to still be sexy and interesting.

For all the fans of "Red Light Special" (one of my top 5 favorites), here u go; enjoy biggrin

Chilli had no (ahem) flava. She was a pretty chick with a decent voice and no real personality. T-Boz and Lefty had the 'tude and personality.

i disagree. i think she was (is) great, the exact link between lisa's over the top presence and tionne's laid back sass. her voice is awesome, she can dance, and she was very, very easy on the eyes. she brought the sex appeal in an understated, kicked back way. and her harmonies with t boz were tight as hell.

you do have to, on some level, give a shout out to ms. debra killings (sp?), as her vocals were used on literally all their hit records, since lisa didnt sing, she just rapped.

Interesting description. On stage persona is one thing but off is another. After watching the VH1 doc of Lisa, I found that it only reaffirmed my perception of her. More or less, she was just misunderstood by some who hadn't took the time to look beyond the surface.

What song does "Sumthin' Wicked This Way Comes" sample? It came on my iPod the other day, and I swear the guitar part in the background is a sample from something or other... Not listed in the credits, though...

Generally, no. It was usually whoever was producing the song that wrote it. Except Left Eye always wrote her own raps.
