Who Were The Best Male R&B Vocalists of the '90s? My nominees would be K-Ci Hailey and Tevin Campbell. Christopher Williams was also a bad mofo, but K-Ci and Tevin top the ranks for me. “The man who never looks into a newspaper is better informed than he who reads them, inasmuch as he who knows nothing is nearer to truth than he whose mind is filled with falsehoods and errors.”

I don't want 2 diss ur picks, those guys are weak compared to: Maxwell D'Angelo Johnnie Gill (he can still be considered 90s because of his last 2 solo albums) Gerald Levert Kevon Edmonds (I don't care for Melvin's voice...he's a weak vocalist in compairson) Ronald Isley (He released MANY hits in the 90s). R. Kelly (He may be a perv, buy his songs in the 90s were amazing). **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

R. Kelly (He may be a perv, buy his songs in the 90s were amazing). We're talking about voices here, not material. And if you seriously think Maxwell is a better singer than K-Ci then you need to get your ears tested immediately. His voice was smooth, but had no depth or range. Johnny Gill overdid the whole "brawny" sound. D'Angelo was a good Curtis/Prince copycat, but his voice didn't give you the same gut-punch K-Ci's did. Now, Ronald Isley we can agree on. He was great, although I don't see him as a purely '90s act like the others here since his heyday was the '70s. And a quick word for Tevin. That boy's range, flexibility and power was out of this world. There's no-one comparable in today's mainstream R&B. “The man who never looks into a newspaper is better informed than he who reads them, inasmuch as he who knows nothing is nearer to truth than he whose mind is filled with falsehoods and errors.”

Makes a note to check out Sam Halter and the Edmond Brothers
Plans to come back and kick some ass if they're anything less than great “The man who never looks into a newspaper is better informed than he who reads them, inasmuch as he who knows nothing is nearer to truth than he whose mind is filled with falsehoods and errors.”

That boy's range, flexibility and power was out of this world. There's no-one comparable in today's mainstream R&B. K-Ci's voice was FLAT on most of his recordings with Jodeci and with JoJo. I'm not saying he doesn't have a good voice, but listen to the song "Life", he is so off key it is sad. Now, his earlier work with Jodeci (especially the first 2 albums) was great. I guess the drugs/smokes/whatever caused his voice to change. Maxwell (IMO) is a MUCH better singer than K-Ci. He has a certain innocence in the quality of his voice. He has a voice that can be seductive, yet engaging. K-Ci's voice is not. He doesn't possess the control that others do. As for R. Kelly, his VOICE is great. Don't believe me, listen to "The Greatest Sex", "Forever", and almost anything from The Chocolate Factory album. As for Johnny, I agree that he overdoes it at times, but if you listen to songs like "I Know Where I stand", "Love In An Elevator", "Quiet Time To Play", etc., you get to hear the range and emotion in his voice. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

Duh, it's the earlier work I'm talking about. It goes without saying he lost it eventually, but listen to his recording of "If You Think You're Lonely Now", or his live vocals on the Uptown Unplugged album. My man is KILLING IT! K-Ci was a monster. And I ain't talking about his looks. Maxwell (IMO) is a MUCH better singer than K-Ci. He has a certain innocence in the quality of his voice. Nonsense. Maxwell's voice is fine, but vocalists like him are a dime a dozen. I can take you to clubs to hear some unsigned performers and you'll quickly see how common those types of singers are. They are everywhere. Same goes for John B. As for R. Kelly, his VOICE is great. Don't believe me, listen to "The Greatest Sex", "Forever", and almost anything from The Chocolate Factory album.
No argument there. I know full well how good R's voice is. But he can't beat people up with his voice like K-Ci could, and I enjoy Tevin's range more, particularly on the I'm Ready album. Some of the notes Tevin's hitting there are OUTRAGEOUS! But I wouldn't take anything away from R. Kelly. He's a great singer. “The man who never looks into a newspaper is better informed than he who reads them, inasmuch as he who knows nothing is nearer to truth than he whose mind is filled with falsehoods and errors.”

Their voices were a little on the "winey" side for me. I'm not saying I don't like their material, because I do (especially Tevin), but they can be very "theatrical" at times in their music. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

savage garden r.kelly boyz II men 112 k-ci & jo-jo ginuwine new edition soul for real New Edition? For the 90s? I don't think this person understands the topic. Groups have multiple members. Is he saying all the members are all equally great? And New Edition wouldn't be among the best vocalists of ANY decade. “The man who never looks into a newspaper is better informed than he who reads them, inasmuch as he who knows nothing is nearer to truth than he whose mind is filled with falsehoods and errors.”

They also seemed to give him sub-par material (compared to other MCA artists). Does anyone know what he's up to? **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

I hope he gets another chance to release new material. We graduated together back in the day and he is an excellent vocalist. | |
