DOLLY PARTON'S NEW CD BACKWOODS BARBIE

The Country Legend returns to the Nashville scene with an amazing masterpiece.

Dolly Parton

Backwoods Barbie

(Dolly Records)

A BARBIE WITH HUMANITY: Dolly Parton returns to a more mainstream country sound after several acclaimed bluegrass outings. But what's so cool is she managed to weave some of that genuine front-porch sensibility, specifically through liberal use of banjo, mandolin and fiddle, to create a transitional bridge from one phase to the other. Most of the dozen tunes are from her pen, of course. She also offers a fun cover of Fine Young Cannibals' "She Drives Me Crazy," which Miss Dolly renamed "Drives Me Crazy," and a sweet take on Smokey Robinson's "The Tracks of My Tears."

BUT THE ORIGINALS SPEAK: Three of the songs – the positive, sprightly "Better Get to Livin'," the tender, autobiographical title track, and the heartbreaking ballad "Cologne" –are new masterpieces for the country legend. And whether you're religious or not, you'd connect to the uplifting message in "Jesus & Gravity," written by Nashville's Craig Wiseman and Betsy Ulmer. As usual, Ms. Parton sings it all with such down-home conviction. Her voice remains a national wonder.

BOTTOM LINE: She can dress up in an elegantly gaudy combo of silk, satin and gingham. She can slip into high-heel shoes and strap on a tall wig. She can even slather on the make-up and press the false eyelashes. But underneath she's still Dolly Parton, country music's honest musical storyteller from the Tennessee mountains.

I'm not even through my first spin and already I'm loving it. The First single which I thought was kinda iffy is amazing without the video. The Cover of "She Drives Me Crazy" is great fun. "Cologne" is a true and true Dolly instant classic.

Hell this could get some airplay eek

headbang thumbs up! thumbs up!

P.S. Heres another review.

Does she finally come out of the closet on the record?

Za?

I noticed this was coming out and I think it's kind of cool with all the hype being about Janet and Erykah (I skipped out on buying her album...will maybe pick it up later in the week), it's good to see Dolly get some press, too.

I keep meaning to check some of Dolly's blue grass stuff, but never seem to get round to it. She deserves and receives respect as a songwriter (less imo for the wretched 'I Will Always Love You' smile , more for the likes of 'Jolene' and 'Coat of Many Colours'.
