What factor makes a record a sure hit?

PLEASE: this topic is not about Sean~SeanJohn~P-Diddy~Diddy~whateverhecallshimselfnow~Combs, please answer the question, do not critique his answer.

This question was posed to Sean Combs in the March 3, 2008 edition of Time Magazine in their 10 Questions column.

"What factor makes a record a sure hit?

Melody. When you hear a Beatles' melody or Marvin Gaye, it changes everything around you. You ever see those commercials where somebody's someplace and then the whole room changes? Melody does that."

Now it is your turn: what factor(s) make a record a sure hit?

Usually a song you can sing along to. People Love to be able to either sing along or whistle along to a song they like. That usually makes a hit....simplicity is key IMO. wink

Currently?

First get some dopey lyrics (example):
Soulja Boy Off In This Hoe
Watch Me Crank It
Watch Me Roll
Watch Me Crank Dat Soulja Boy
Then Super Man Dat Hoe

Make sure there's a minimum amount of music.
Better yet, have no music, just a computerized beat.
(minumize the talent required)

Have a clown-like image (example)...

...A look that nobody outside of Ringling Brothers would consider.

Didn't mean to focus on anyone in particular.
Feel free to insert any ringtone "star" of the last hour.

Not every hit single since the charts were introduced were hits because of payola, sleeping with DJ's and record execs and about 1% of the hit songs of the last 50 years have been "shit hop". So what made those songs hits? The songs made before this current age of music that you all hate so much.

payola, sleeping with people, and the double scanning of CDs at the record store, a hugh promotional push for the flavor of the month.

Only a few songs get buy on melody and quality. Please listen to radio today and think about it.
