One of the most overrated bands ever Oh I didn't see that they were listed on here as well. I agree that they are overrated, mostly because their sound hasn't changed in ages. They keep putting the same album out over and over again. I do like their really early stuff though. And given the context/time that the early stuff was put out, it was a pretty cool new sound and scene back then. Very different. I was totally into all that and I love the sound of real hardcore bands mixing in different elements like ska, reggae, funk, rap, etc. a la Fishbone, Bad Brains, early RHCP, and even early Beastie Boys. I don't listen to all of those bands as much now as I used to, but when I'm in a nostalgic mood for my teenage years, that's probably what I'll be blasting up to eleven. But as I said, I find the RHCP really boring now. "I saw a woman with major Hammer pants on the subway a few weeks ago and totally thought of you." - sextonseven

The answer given was not Radiohead, so the answer to the question has to be no. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

No, maybe for the OP it is. But in general terms the Charlatans are not really seen as one of the 'relevant' british bands of the last 20 years (understatement...)
And in my opinion, in terms of quality there are some underrated British bands who are no competition for the wee 'baggy-pop' from the Charlatans: Teenage Fanclub, the scottish Power-pop darlings for example, The Endrick Brothers, scottish again, country-rock this time, are another example.

Crowded House (although they started in '85)
You get it. | |

Oh, we are not limited for British bands i see, well then i have some more picks (and i limit myself to BANDS only):
* Crowded House of course, criminally underrated, some of the best songwriting in pop-history. * The Jayhawks: started as a country-rock outfit, incorporating power-pop elements later in their career. * King's X: one of the few hardrock bands i really like. A glorious mix of low-tuned guitars, funky bass-work and beatlesque harmonies. * Living Colour: one of the best cross-over bands. They beat the RHCP by far when it comes to the quality of the vocals, the inventive guitarwork and their stylistic richness. * Urban Dance Squad: pioneers of the funk-metal crossover from the late eighties / early nineties. But they were far broader reaching and intelligent then the likes of Rage against the machine and let alone those one-dimensional dumbheads from Korn and Limp Bizkit. Their ability to mix funk, rock, pop, folk, blues, soul, samples and real instruments is groundbreaking and predates artists like Beck and Soul coughing by years. * The Posies: mixing the sweet harmonies of The Hollies, with the bleak, crackling power-pop of Big Star. * World Party: i am cheating a bit here, because World Party is actually a one man band: Karl Wallinger. I seem to think of him as the british "Prince" in my mind. He has the same uncanned ability to incorporate any musical style he chooses for in his music. Jumping from a Stones riff, to a Dylanesque lament, from Beatlesque harmonies to dry Sly Stone / Prince-funk so easily, that its awe-inspiring. The big differences with Prince: he is a far better lyricist, and he doesnt take himself so serious as Prince often does, his music and lyrics show a sense of irony and playfullness that Prince often misses.

Not counting Prince, the baddest band 4 my MONEY in the last 20 years is Mint Condition.
It's not even close in my mind.
