Whatever happened to the Marvin Gaye movie? I thought it got the green light in 2006. Is it filming? Started? Post production? Any info?
JESSE L. MARTIN will portray MARVIN GAYE in a new movie about the late soul star's life. The 39-year-old, who has previously showed off his singing skills in rock musical Rent, will play the legendary Motown star in Sexual Healing - a film based loosely on author Steven Turner's book Trouble Man. The screenplay will document Gaye's rise to international fame in the 1960s and 1970s, right through to his split from the Motown Record label in the 1980s and his self-imposed exile in Europe. Gaye died in April 1984 - one day before his 45th birthday (02Apr84) - when he was shot and killed by his father following an argument. The Sopranos star James Gandolfini is also slated to appear in the film as promoter Freddy Cousaert, and will produce the project, according to Variety. . Production is to begin later this spring.
http://www.nytimes.com/20...l?ref=arts Detective Ed Green of the New York Police Department is turning in his shield. What that means is that Jesse L. Martin, above, is leaving the role he has played since 1999 on the NBC drama “Law & Order,” The Associated Press reported. An episode to be filmed in the spring will account for Green’s departure. Mr. Martin, who took a break from “Law & Order” to star in the 2005 film version of the Broadway musical “Rent,” is to portray the singer Marvin Gaye in the film “Sexual Healing,” scheduled to begin production in the spring, with James Gandolfini among his co-stars. Anthony Anderson, whose credits include the Fox television series “K-Ville,” FX’s “Shield” and the films “The Departed” and “Transformers,” was reported to be concluding negotiations with “Law & Order” to join the cast as the new partner for Detective Cyrus Lupo, played by Jeremy Sisto.

There's another Marvin Gaye film currently in works too. "Marvin - The Marvin Gaye Story" is now being worked on for a possible 2009/2010 release too. D. Stevens was the director before, now he's been replaced by F. Gary Gray.
The movie will focus on all of Marvin's life from his formative years to his Motown eras to his final days.

This one is scheduled for 2009:

The movie will focus on all of Marvin's life from his formative years to his Motown eras to his final days. This one sounds alot more promising than the "Sexual Healing" film, which will only focus on the last four years of Marvin's life.I wonder who they will get to play Marvin in this film? I always thought that Brian McKnight would be a good choice.

I always thought that Brian McKnight would be a good choice. They'll probably pick either him or Ricky Fante to play him. I don't know, maybe like the play "My Brother Marvin", there will be at least four different Marvin's: 1.) The kid Marvin 2.) The teenage/young adult Marvin 3.) The Marvin who did the Tammi Terrell duets through "Here, My Dear" 4.) The Marvin of the final years It should be interesting if "Sexual Healing" ends up being canceled and Jesse Martin plays one of the Marvin's (probably the last era one) on "Marvin".

[Edited 2/25/08 9:02am] Yeah I see that, lol. But it should be interesting if Lauren Goodman can convince Motown to use Marvin's 1960s and 1970s hit material like Duncan McGillviray (sp?) did for "Marvin". [Edited 2/25/08 9:33am]

Peeps have been going on about this movie for yrs now, since the mid 80s. I remember there was talk of Jermaine or Michael(when he still looked black) playing Marvin and this was back in 85 or so.
