Don't hate Madonna did some revolutionary and ground breaking music in her day. She did things NO other female and very few male artists ever accomplished. All while in complete control of her image and message. Yeah, she stole a lot of stuff from various underground movements but they prolly wouldn't have seen the light of day if it wasn't for her ability to recognize hot shit, package it, and sell it to the masses.

Playing instruments is not the only way one can create something. Also, she used to be a drummer in a band before she made it and plays other instruments. I'm not saying she's a prodigy but she's definitely musical. Lots of people and groups are in the hall of fame that do not play instruments. neutral

For the past 25 years,Madonna has been one of the most popular, influential female pop artists, period. When we talk about 80s pop,we often refer to "the big three"---Prince,Michael Jackson and Madonna.I think Madonna's career, her amazing longevity, her abiltity to re-invent herself, her stellar catalog, her numerous hit singles and albums, her hugely successful tours, and the fact that she's survived it all without losing her mind (lol).....these things make her a perfect candidate for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

If you're confused about Madonna's induction, just wait a few years till everyone's favourite lip-syncher, Janet WACKson is inducted. The problem is the MTV babies (that includes Madonna) are all becoming eligible for induction now. It was with the advent of MTV that companies started selling "products" more than artists. This presents a problem for the hall of fame. Either they have to induct less people from now on, in order to keep it respectable, or they have to induct a lower calibre of performer. We already know which way it's gonna go.

Not that she really does rock and roll. But she did help define pop music and dance music for over 2 decades. I think that anyone who changes/develops the musical landscape probably gets inducted, esp now that we are moving into a time where pop ruled and not rock. Wait another 10 years when bands like Nirvana will get inducted.

I find this very laughable. Who does she want to be? A wanna be what? Pop star? Superstar? World Icon? Mother? It seems like she became who she wanted to be and more..

You know, if someone does get inducted, they have to be somewhat worthy or they wouldn't get nominated let alone inducted. JJ is pretty big too and has added a lot the musical R&B landscape.

highly ironic since the Websters Dictionary added the word wannabe to the dicitionary in 1985 because of the whole Madonna wannabe craze of young girls at that time.

A lot of the inductees aren't really "Rock n Roll" but she's been one of the most successful recording artists for the last 25 years. She's equal with Elvis for Top 10 hits. She's had incredible commercial staying power. Her ability to know a 'hit' record is amazing. I'm surprised she's still so underestimated.

Madonna also perfected The David Bowie Rule:

She has continue to reinvent her image & her sound along with the times.

Hey watch it! Janet deserves a place in the R&RHOF for groundbreaking albums like Control & RN1814.

And since her self-titled debut album was release in 1982, I'm a little surprise that Janet isn't in the HOF before Madonna.

again a very very smart business woman...todays generation could learn a thing from her or how to take ownership of thier career.

but i cant look back at her career and said "true blue" is the greatest album of all time and inspired todays artists...even mariah laughs at her now..and thats pretty sad!!!

Why would Mariah laugh? She has a great voice but she aint no icon or legend and certainly not in Madonna's league. I can't believe anyone is questioning whether or not Madonna should be inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame though. The woman is an icon, legend, superstar-whatever you want to call it she has definitely left her mark and will be remembered for years and years to come. She more than deserves to get in.

You mean Mariah Carey, the artist who makes the same album over and over? Don't get me wrong,I like Mariah but she's not nearly as interesting as Madonna.Mariah would never make a bold, challenging album.

I think mostly for the ground she broke for female performers. I'm not saying she's the first woman in rock/pop to make strides forward for women performers but there is a definate before Madonna and after Madonna in music history. After her, female performers have been able to play on a much more level playing field, the charts are no longer male dominated. For that alone she should be commended.

As for her music, she has made some tremendous dance music over the years. I think dance/electronic music doesn't get the props it deserves in the States, like it does in the rest of the world. But I think its just as important a genre as rock, r'n'b, soul, etc.
