You guys really think this would have been "a guaranteed smash hit"? confused

It would've done okay, but not a huge hit

I guess the reality is that no one knows until it's released, right? You can predict all you like, but the fact is that we only have opinion to go on and since it will never be released, we wil never know.

Don't get me wrong... I love the song and it sounded fresher than anything off Invincible... but it got leaked and that's a shame, but it's time has passed! It's now 5 years later and it's over! I don't want anything rehashed... I want new stuff!

Um, he just served up too rehashed songs ("For All Time" and "Got the Hots"). Stevie Wonder's "Overjoyed" was a rehashed song from Journey Through the Secret Life of Plants.

I don't care if "Xscape" has hit potential or not. "Hits" these days are usually garbage IMO. The only thing I care about is that I like it a lot. I also think the Oakenfold remix of "One More Chance" is fantastic, so I'm glad that saw the light of day.

That was a different situation- "serving up old tracks" as bonuses or in collections of demos or on re-releases isn't a bad thing. And they aren't re-hashed if they haven't been released or leaked anywhere before. People are saying that Xscape should be a new single... which I disagree with. It's an old song. (It's brilliant though)

I too love the PO mix of OMC (better than the original) lol

I just don't get that, though. It's been linked only to the fans rabid enough to look for unreleased songs to download -- and those are the fans who will probably buy it anyway. After an album is initially released, all of the subsequent singles are technically "old" songs that the public that has already heard, but they can still be pushed to radio and video channels. Just off the top of my head, "Love Will Never Do (Without You)" was released over a year after the album. That was a different time for singles, but still -- just because millions of people have already heard it doesn't mean it can't be a viable single.

Well some of Michael's best songs were written for earlier albums

Wanna Be Startin Somethin- written back in 1978 or 1979
Heal The World-written and recorded back 1988 or 1989
Black Or White-originally a Bad outtake
Earth Song- originally written and recorded back in 1988
Little Susie-originally written back in 1979 for a broadway project(or whatever he had planned)

he's done much rehashing
Come Together
Blood On The Dancefloor
Morphine
Superfly Sister
Ghost
Is It Scary
One More Chance

were all rehashes

But that is completely different to releasing an OLD track that has been leaked as a single right? I mean all those except for Come Together were developed over years and years. They were never released or leaked prior to them going on an album.

Black or White a Bad outtake? where'd you get that from?

Heal The World doesn't really count, coz Bad was already out when he wrote it, and it went on the next one. It was well known Michael worked on Dangerous from 1988/89-1991.

Rehashing songs you kept in a vault (unreleased and unleaked) for years and developing them further is completely different to "re-hashing" a song from a few years ago that was already released and issuing it as a single, isn't it?

Black or White was a developed from a demo that was recorded for Bad.

And I will ask again- "where'd you get that from"?

I do know it was "pulled out of a vault" in 1989 (according to For The Record) but I have never seen anything that says it was a demo recorded for Bad. This is what For The Record says- that it was the beginning of a guitar intro that was pulled from a vault that he wanted to use on "Black Or White".

Opening guitar first recorded at Michael’s Encino home. ‘That piece of
music, the beginning part that Slash plays on, was recorded at
Michael’s house,’ confirmed Bottrell. ‘Michael asked me to dig it out
of the vault in August of 1989. He had in mind to use it as the intro to
Black Or White – it took a long time before we got Slash on it.’

The full interview of Bill Botrell about this track makes it sound like the whole song was developed in the studio during the Dangerous sessions.

Any how, Xscape is a bit different than the other "re-hashes" you mentioned.

So, Who is it was actually intended for Dangerous (or the next album). lol

Anyways, the songs to go on decade were Come Together, Men in Black, I'll Be There (adult), Never Can Say Goodbye (adult), and a couple of others. (all info from For The Record). Decade was going to be released in 1990 (Decade 1980-1990) but yes, it turned into Dangerous.

I agree that Xscape would have done well in the US.
