Why India Aire boycotted the Grammys http://www.kblx.com/morni...nute.shtml
INDIA.ARIE SAYS SHE BOYCOTTED GRAMMYS Singer and songwriter India.Arie says that this year she boycotted the Grammy Awards. Though she was nominated in the R&B song category for "Beautiful Flower," the earthy performer said she made the decision to stay away from the glitzy 50th anniversary celebration because the politics of the music industry "annoy" her. * Backstage at the NAACP Image Awards in Los Angeles, where she served as a presenter Thursday night, Arie said: "It was a very quiet boycott, but I boycotted the Grammys. Because I am just tired of the politics. At first I felt like I was being rebellious, but really I was just honoring myself. Because it hurts to sit there and know that you're gonna get ignored. You just know, you know what's gonna happen." * Arie continued: "Yes, the Grammys, they annoy me. But -- but -- I still know that I am honored to be in those categories. I got nominated for a song that really is a folk song, it's just guitar and vocal, there was no bass, there's no piano, there no drums, it was just a song for the girls at Oprah's school. And to be nominated for anything -- I know that God has put me in these places, I understand that. But there is also an earthly reality about the Grammys and the politics." * Arie did not elaborate on what she was specifically referring to in the Grammy process, but the "Video" singer added that her feelings are very clearly expressed in her music. * Arie won two Grammy's at the 2002 ceremonies. This year, her "Beautiful Flower" lost out to Alicia Keys' chart powerhouse "No One." * Arie's latest CD is the 2006 release Testimony, Vol. 2: Love & Politics. love is a fate resigned memories mar my mind love it is a fate resigned Over futile odds and laughed at by the Gods and now the final frame Love is a losing game

I think this stems from the year she was badly robbed blind when nominated in eight categories and getting shut out, losing to Nelly Furtado from what I recall.

She's Kanye Pest with titties and slightly less mouth.
The chick bitched and moaned because she lost to Mister Alicia and then they gave in and handed her a couple. She should be happy with that. They had no business recognizing her or Mr. Keys, and there are much more deserving artists out there compared to India. There are people who would give a body part to have the opportunities and exposure this so-so chick has. HO SIT DOWN.

India Arie boycotted the Grammys because no one's thought about her since a few years ago when she was the darling of Awards Season. She needed to get her name tied to the Grammys again, so boycotting them was the quickest route.
But if you boycott something as a statement and no one knows about it, then what's the point. Look at the headline "INDIA.ARIE SAYS SHE BOYCOTTED GRAMMYS". Nobody knew. It's reported on after the fact. Way to stand up for something and get your message out there I boycotted the Grammys too. I didn't go. I wasn't invited and had absolutely no reason to be there, but I'm going to pretend like it was a boycott on principle. this has to be the most vague and crytpic boycott i've ever heard of.
How can you be honored to be nominated at an event you don't won't to be part of?

How can you be honored to be nominated at an event you don't won't to be part of? It is a total riddle and I think whatever you conclude is really a person's own projection onto the situation. For instance, I could say "I think she means that a nod is flattering but music isn't a contest" but that's probably just what I think.

If a grammy doesn't mean anything either way then why say anything at all?

I'm sure that she was missed.
I mean, I really don't know, since I've been boycotting the Grammys' since the mid 1980's. Though, maybe I'm using the term boycotting incorrectly. Does indifference play in any roll in the definition of the concept of boycotting? Also, I know that, when someone wins a Grammy, the say they've won a Grammy. So why is it that the plural form is spellt Grammys' instead of Grammies? Or am I asking a quesion that can only be understood by continuingly watching the Grammys'? Cuz if so, then if this question continues to nagginly plague me in any way, does that make it my own damn fault?

India.Arie remains an anomaly the industry doesn't know how to handle. She's smart, can sing, write good lyrics, loves her ethnicity and has decent production. Most of her music maintains a positive bent.
But she is ignored, compared with other artists with far lesser talent, focus and depth. Because she doesn't fit their packaging. If, by that third, wonderful album of hers, she had found ways to relax and dye her hair blonde, change up her fashion to tighter and shorter clothes and fill her project with "bangers" about lovin' her boo and clubbing, she'd be in a different rung in the industry. Not to mention if she lived self-destructively and embarrassingly. So, she boycotts an industry that pays her lip-service. Probably the healthiest thing for her to do.

Take the same public rejection as she endured, and then come back to me and say "suck it up, and be glad you're even mentioned today AT ALL".

People really need to stop reciting the neosoul marketing package rant.
Yes, it's true, but there is such a thing as a hack or so-so or just plain shitty artist who DOESN'T rely on glitter and ass. Hell, a lot of these "neosoul" or whatever acts sample and water down hits just as much as the glittery ass acts. EFF her boycott. EFF her statement. India, if you have a problem with the industry, KICK ROCKS. Go sell incense and twist locs for a living.
