HOLY MOSES!!! I've loved this song for 12 years & I only just realised what it's about!

I always just thought of it as a song about two childhood friends who lost contact. Then just yesterday I found this acapella version on Youtube and it suddenly hit me. The song's about a girl who dies from a backstreet abortion. The fact that the song's being performed at an abortion rights rally kind of gave a clue, but it was when I heard the line "In tears she told me she was late" that I cottoned on. I must have heard that line a million times and never realised it was referring to a, uhhh.....woman's thing. Then the line "was lost from some back alley job" tells you the rest. Back in the '60s when abortion was illegal this kind of thing used to happen all the time. Songs written about this kind of thing can often be preachy, but this song feels personal.

It gave me chills too. No-one in the audience had heard the song before and yet they were rapt throughout. The intro was cute too. "Ain't got no band...yeee". lol But what about the theme? Did you know it was about that before? Or am I the only one?

Wikipedia (helpful as always) had one line of information about the song. Here it is...."The song was inspired by the story of a childhood friend of Lauper, who in her teens got pregnant, had a back-alley abortion, and died as a result." Would like to know more, but details are scarce. neutral

The video for the song, directed by Cyndi herself.
