Song Review by Ed Hogan (Allmusic.com)
What woman wouldn't want Stevie Wonder to write a love song to her? Wonder was smitten with songwriter Sylvia Moy, with whom he'd co-written several hits, including "Uptight (Everything's Alright)," "Nothing's Too Good for My Baby," "With a Child's Heart," the B-side favorite "Aint That Asking for Trouble," and the hidden gem "I'd Cry." "Sylvia" is a tender ballad with coying horns, a trembling mandolin line that suggests a romantic evening in Rome, and "ooh-ahh"ing background vocals. The 15-year-old Wonder's vocals reflect a youthful innocence and a clear romantic sense. Co-written by Wonder producer Henry Cosby and Moy herself, "Sylvia" was included on the Down to Earth LP and the B-side of "A Place in the Sun," a 1966 number three R&B/number nine pop hit which was in the vein of Bob Dylan's "Blowin' in the Wind." Wonder's 1966 cover of the Dylan song went to number one R&B and number nine pop.

![]() That's not such a crazy statement. In the '60s Stevie was not quite the vocalist he became in the '70s. “The man who never looks into a newspaper is better informed than he who reads them, inasmuch as he who knows nothing is nearer to truth than he whose mind is filled with falsehoods and errors.”

He was a little raw round the edges in the '60s. Case in point. Check out the high notes here....

That was from the late '60s too. I tried to find earlier footage where he was rawer, but I ran out of patience. ![]() btw, Berry Gordy said Stevie's voice was only "okay" when he first signed him. ![]() “The man who never looks into a newspaper is better informed than he who reads them, inasmuch as he who knows nothing is nearer to truth than he whose mind is filled with falsehoods and errors.”

![]() Berry Gordy hated What's Going On. He's not infallible. ![]() I still say this is perfect: ![]() "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis
