I've never been an Aretha fan, but her ego makes her even more foul. Just like Usher and Kanye. It's not attractive. Watching it again, she didn't call Tine the queen of soul. She simply called her the queen and that she had all the elements she was listing prior. Aretha doesn't have all those elements

I think the "queen" (and "king") titles are overrated. Why can't they just call them legends and leave it at that because at the end of the day that's what they are regardless of our opinions.
[Edited 2/13/08 19:44pm]

True. I'm not debating who should be called queen or not even though Tina is more "my" queen than Aretha is. I just can't stand Aretha's stank attitude as well as not being a fan of hers

Oh, yeah, fuck Beyonce

I wonder if Tina will bother making a response because I think, ultimately, this was a diss to her. Aretha just basically saying "Chile, Anna Mae ain't shit - I'm the Queen!". neutral

Somehow I can't picture it. About a gazllion years ago I got a chance too see Miss Turner in passing a few times (shopping actually)....and you know how some people, when you see them they emit really positive energy, radient health, almost like they have a "glow" around them? That's TOTALLY her vibe. She's that woman that walks into a room, and you have to look back twice, because there's something positively magnetic and stunning about her presence, yet very calming.

Tina's a very regal and sophisticated woman. Somehow I doubt she'll get herself entangled in a flack as silly as this hmmm. Keep in mind she is a Buddhist, my experience has been that they tend to be very peaceful people with a knack for letting things roll off their back and soaring above the negativity of things surrounding them. I think if anything, while Aunty Re-Re is sitting up huffing and puffing getting herself in a tizzy, and the Knowles camp is playing the PR spin game- Miss Anna Mae is at home meditating in front of her infinity pool overlooking the French Riviera, completely oblivious or neutral to any of this ruckus lol lol lol

I believe Tina Turner has been far more popular in Europe than Aretha Franklin.

There you go with that europe stuff again. Why wouldn't tina be more popular
in europe? She fuggin lives there!! So you basically by making this statement
already conceded that aretha franklin is far more relevant than tina here in
the states. I lost respect for tina years ago in the early 80's when she made
the statement that R&B was boring and that's why she turned to rock yet her
roots were R&B. She is from missisippi and her fake ass goes to europe and all
of a sudden she has an accent. I think the press is probably blowing it all out of a proportion but beyonce should have just simply introduced tina as the legendary tina turner versus giving her the queen title which has been aretha's moniker forever and a day and aretha is not even my favorite female vocalist but she is far better than tina.

For the record, when you move out of the US, and have very limited chance to speak your native language as you knew it anymore, your way of pronouncing words WILL change.

I, for example, have retained my ability to speak "ebonics"... THAT's EASY. Because that was my formative language from birth, spoken in my home. It is the dialect I speak when I chat with my siblings or parents when we phone once a month. However, my standard English has changed drastically in the last 15 years because my ear is NO.LONGER.ACCUSTOMED.TO.STANDARD.AMERICAN.ENGLISH. Even Europeans who've learned to speak English certainly don't speak American English. Europeans are instructed in the Queen's English from the time they are children, so the English spoken here (when it is spoken or written) is British. On television, in conversation, EVERYWHERE.

If I was to go into a building and ask where to find the elevator, many people wouldn't know what I was talking about, because the proper term used here is "lift". A sweater is not a sweater here, it is a "jumper". What happens is overthe course of time your brain and ear simply becomes accustomed to another way of hearing and pronouncng words, and that's pretty much what eventually rolls out of your mouth when you open it to speak. It's not an affectation. It's a reflection of the daily reality in which you live. twocents

It speaks volumes when you have to jump up and down and pitch a fit about a Title that has been given to you. Your hard work and talent speaks for itself.

Sounds like Aretha may be trying to convince herself that she still deserves her coronation.

But the fact that he commented he knew the story would get out.

This Grammy will be remembered for so many negatives:
Aretha's comment
Natalie's comment
Nas and Kelis's fashion choice
Rhianna interrupting The Time
Been gone for a minute, now I'm back with the jump off

They've admitted before that they shield her from bad press because she used to be too sensitive. So now it seems that she' stopped reading it altogether and I suppose they only show her well, you know, the "complimentary" stuff...with the schedules these younger mega celebrities keep it's not all that hard to never see what's written about themselves...

Yep. It works the same when people from other English-speaking countries come to the U.S. too. Their accents fade

Interestingly, no one talks shit about Charlize Theron's complete loss of her South African accent. I've met other people from there who have lived here for years and their accents are DEEP
