Neither Fish Nor Flesh (A Soundtrack of Love, Faith, Hope & Destruction) is Terence Trent D'Arby's second album, released in 1989 on Columbia Records. Coming off the heels of his highly success debut album Introducing the Hardline According to Terence Trent D'Arby, suffice to say this album was highly anticipated. The album was panned by many critics at the time as being overly indulgent, scattered with pretentious song titles, and unfocused.[citation needed] Rolling Stone critic Mark Coleman described the album as "an inconsistent concept album... despite his aspirations toward Messianic rock stardom...".
The album can be seen as another example of the sophomore slump that many artist find themselves in when it comes time to release their second album. Maxwell's second album Embrya (1998) drew a lot of parallels to this album.

It's a comfort album.

I dont think this album is that bad. A bit self indulgent? yes, but most art is. 'Billy Dont Fall', 'To KNow Someone..', 'I Dont Want to Bring YOur GodsDown' are standouts.

Also disagree about the Embrya comparisson. Embrya is another album that gets slammed by critics, but IMHO its just as good as Urban Hang Suite.

I have to dig anything he's ever brought out because of his voice!

this was TTD's follow up album to a brilliant first album... imo

I never got into it ...

now- years later - this thread kinda makes me wanna get the album out and give it a listen (if i can find it lol) ...

(i just wanna add- i love his albums after this - all of em - better than his 1st albums and 2nds album imo)

I got this one on vinyl.When it came out they never showed the videos on TV.
I love this album alot.

It definitely ain't "Introducing..." pt. 2, it sounds more like TTD more than TTD on a production line.

It's a Great album. My favorites are This Side of Love and You will pay tomorrow.

It's not however his finest. The award goes to Symphony or Damn, which also boasts some excellent b-sides from the singles.

And Embrya is another classic, I much prefer it to Urban Hang Suite.

I absolutely love TTD and have all his cd's. This one is my least favorite, but it's still ok. TTD has the most awesome voice. I just love it!

I love this album the first time I heard it. I really don't have a ranking for TTD album they are all awesome. Roly Poly is sooooo funky, probably his funkiest track.
Billy don't fall is also amazing, he really took a risk with this one but I'm so happy he did.

He really needs Kevin Wyatt's bass to bring back the funk. Damn I miss the old band.

Y'know, I bought this album ( well.... maybe I shoplifted it. I'm not too sure. This was back in the days of my youth, when I was trying to prove to the world that I was hard & finding any excuse I could to stick it to the Man. I usually did this by not paying for anything whenever I went to the mall. And at the arcade, next to the Chess King, I became so good at Centipede, just so's I could get the top four high scores & spelled my name "Fuk D'Man" on 'em. Those scores stood for about 5 yrs) when it first came out, but hardly ever listened to it, that I don't even remember what it sounded like. I don't know if I even still have it.

God, I never expected to see an appreciation thread for this album, but glad it appeared. This is one of the most peculiar albums I've ever heard, and that's why I like it. That it breaks away from Hardling is what blesses it and curses it at the same time (ya'll know the human race's penchant for mindless repetition...)

The album's only negative point is that it seems anacronistic. He was definitely making a good abstract statement, and the album's first four tracks are good theater before he kicks off with a good groove. But I don't think the music listening public at that time had the capacity to digest this album.

My Favorite TTD/Sananda Album... hands down...and I love em all

Beginning to end, this album is excellent. The fact that it was critically panned had a lot to do with music industry politics and the media press' reaction to his bragadocio, not the quality of the music on NFNF.

Terence brought it hard with this album -- lyrically, musically and topically.

Never was a fan of this album, as much as I like TTD...
