NAACP IMAGE AWARDS, TONIGHT, 2/14/08, 8PM EST, FOX CHANNEL, STEVIE WONDER & ARETHA FRANKLIN TO BE HONORED

NAACP Image Awards Will Honor Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder
Roger Catlin | EYE ON TV February 14, 2008

There will be a whole lot of soul at "The 39th NAACP Image Awards" (Fox, 8 p.m.) tonight, broadcast live from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. Aretha Franklin will receive the NAACP Vanguard Award, and Stevie Wonder will be inducted into the NAACP Image Awards Hall of Fame at the event, hosted by D.L. Hughley.

The film "The Great Debaters" is up for the most awards, eight, including outstanding motion picture and outstanding actor and director for Denzel Washington.

Among TV shows, two comedies on The CW — "Everybody Hates Chris" and "Girlfriends" — lead all nominees. America Ferrera, Vanessa L. Williams, Jordin Sparks, Regina Taylor and Richard T. Jones are scheduled to make appearances.

Janet Jackson, Denzel Washington, Don Cheadle and others to appear.

D L Hughley is gross.

I didn't think anyone was more unfunny than Jack Black.

Why would they choose that ASS to host the Image awards after he praised Don Imus?

It's not that she needs a better stylist, she's just reeeeeally "decided" about what things she prefers to wear. She is NOT a person that you say no to if she wants something shake

I thought no one could look more like a clown than the Boss (Ms. Ross) but I guess Auntie Ree beats her in that department. The hell is wrong with the ladies of Detroit? One tells a concert performer to turn the big screens off and another goes off on a young star's speech. evillol Guess they were just being their old diva selves...right? biggrin

Well she ought to say "No" to food, and don't get me wrong, I love Aretha, just upset that she let herself get to that weight, it's unhealthy. I would like to see her around for a while.

From my understanding, she has one, but overrides whatever the stylist says.

The show was kinda shabby. They started rushing through the awards after they got behind in time and weren't even announcing the films/shows the nominees were in.

Judge Mathis was hilarious doing his "Stevie" impression.

Jordan Sparks is fine. The thickness!

Don't know how House of Payne won anything.

Too many mess-ups from Romeo & Pops to the cut-to of DL and Julian at the end of the show.

Stevie could've gone without the whole political banter, but whatever.

Then the sudden cut-off of Stevie's set was janky.

They need more than 2 hours and they should really think about expanding it next year, especially since it will be the NAACP's 100th anniversary.

Oh yeah, when did Wayne Brady start thinking he was funny? He needs to save that shit for the game shows he'll be doing for the rest of his life.

Since she adopted children of color and is probably a member of the NAACP.

I thought only people of color in front of the camera got nominated for awards pertaining to being in front of the camera. I know people behind the scenes of all races have gotten awards, but her nomination confused me

I'm not sure about the nomination process. I do know that some several non-people of color have won awards for their work. Maybe they considered her for her charitable work. I don't know.
