Grammy congrats to Mr. Herbie Hancock...

...for winning Album of the Year & Best Contemporary Jazz Album for River: The Joni Letters.

It's great to see a stellar & versatile musician that has given those paying attention decades of superb product win for a change.
And not only is he a fine musician but he has a quality that a number of these young punks (one in particular) could stand a healthy dose of...HUMILITY!

I figure if the board can be overrun with MJ threads, an incredible musician who's actually still making quality music can stand the same treatment.

Go Herbie! woot!

From a CNN story:

That result left the typically outspoken West in no mood to share his thoughts. West won four trophies, but after losing out once again in the album of the year category he'd made no secret of coveting, he skipped post-show interview rooms to instead pose for photos with his fiance and members of his entourage.

"I'm good," he said quietly, in response to questions about how he felt. It was a subdued echo of the exuberant call on his "Good Life," which won for rap song.

Congratulations, Mr. Hancock.

If he has trouble over losing to freakin' Herbie Hancock disbelief... he's got a lot of growing to do.

100% right. And that is my issue with Kanye, his immaturity, im sure he was thinking with the kind of mentality, "well my cd sold the most, so it should be album of the year", and it just doesnt work that way. Thats what the AMA show is for, popularity, but the grammies for the most is not really about that. And i really must say , that it was good to see someone like Herbie noticed for this record, since jazz for the most part is very ignored. And also it seemed that the Grammies re-embraced jazz/classical/gospel this year, in the last few years its been straight pop/rock/rap/rb/country and the shows ended at 11pm, this time the show ran longer and got those others in. My biggest complaint with the show as always is the lack of giving out the awards, i think there are 400 altogether and about 10-12 were given out on the show, so they need to find a way to at least acknowledge more winners on the show.

I agree with you! Kanye is a very talented guy, with 10 Grammys under his belt, three multi-platinum albums, and has worked with nearly everyone in the industry. But his problem lies when his ego and arrogance stands in the way of his success. I'm personally glad that Herbie got that award, even though it wasn't the most hyped-up album of last year or it didn't spin off any smash singles. Herbie and nearly the whole jazz world has waited for a quarter of a century to get that pretigious honor again and history was made for him and jazz again. Kanye has a problem with the fact that an artist's barrier isn't getting the Grammy for Album of The Year or having publicity, but an artist's talent itself.

In other words, kudos to Herbie! A big shocker, but what a big accomplishment. I even think I'll buy the CD now. razz

It's weird how the Grammys will have some piece of fluff like Rhianna up for awards because she was popular, but also give the top honor to an album that I didn't know existed.

I really like that they picked it on it's merit, but it also shows that the Grammys are kind of an industry insider party.

Still any critique of the Grammys is small in comparison to the fact that every other award show is based entirely on popularity.

Selling a lot of copies is its own reward. A Grammy (at times) is a reward for work well done/respect within the industry.

Hey it is what it is, Uncle Neal. I'm glad for Mr.Hancock, but then again,,,its only a metal comparing to Herbie's musical triumph(s), they're winners in this as much as Herbie if not even more,,,,coz Herbie is already a winner with or without their "metal", and his career speak for itself.

It's funny how they refuse to recognize or acknowledge anything outside of the media blitz culture...If it's not on Entertainment Tonight, it doesn't exist...wow...
